I'm sure the church will take 10% of your income via paypal.

I actually know some people who give 10% of their student loans to the church... She doesn't understand that it isn't her money, it is money that she owes... she literally is worth the price someone is willing to pay for untainted by vices mormon organs.

I predict... old conservative white guy who proclaims that the path to salvation is through jesus, people need to return to the scripture and live their lives in accordance with the word of the bible.

Sorry to be an ass but you don't need this thread to tell you that there is a guy who got a promotion to second in command to god.

lol What? It's the Pope, who gives a crap? Not like it changes anything because some new old guy is running this pointless organization. What information were you possibly hoping to get out of this thread? A run-down of each candidate's running platform?

cam_wmh: "A strong source just let me know Rowan Atkinson is in Vatican City, interviewing for Ratzinger's job. Don't ask me for my source, as I won't say. Simply a messenger.

Do I have a history sharing rumours like this? None.
A proven reputation for breaking news? None there either.

Take it for what it's worth."

Vulcan: "The Pope just won't work in Vatican City anymore. It's been done for centuries and all they manage to do, year after year, is lose membership."

valo403: "Clearly you fail to understand that the Catholic Church has a significant investment in the Vatican City, and has substantial motivation to make it work there."

Bouw N Arrow: "Greg Jamison for Pope!"

Me: "I look forward to seeing the Pope relocate to Quebec City."

Bouw N Arrow: "I hate you all."

You should start a thread about Mormons then.

Catholics are not obliged to tithe. They do ask for people to give within their means, but there is no rule for how much that should be. Many secular organizations also ask for similar types of charity among their members.

The best Catholic issues commentator in Canada (imo, obviously) is Father Raymond de Souza, who writes for the Post. He had an interesting article yesterday about how he thinks the process will go down. He also predicted things pretty well the last time, so worth a read if you're interested. Basically, he thinks Scola of Milan is the first choice, and if he can't get enough support to win they'll move on to the Canadian or American candidates.

PS Like Slava, not Catholic, but find this interesting nonetheless. Sort of like US Presidential elections...

Please, PLEASE don't be the Canadian one.

The head of one of the most hypocritical, corrupt, and outdated political institutions on Earth? Saying nothing of the constant scandals and evil behavior that constantly comes out of it that they don't want to do anything about.

You really wanna see a Canuck heading that?

As a nearly complete atheist I'd like to see a pope come in and clean house and reboot the franchise. Open the books, take the moral high ground and have a clear mission statement based around clothing the needy and feeding the hungry.

The church is becoming a vestigial remnant of our primitive brains, time to make it an institution of tangible acts and less on moralities that people don't agree upon. Enforce the ten commandments and help people, simplify things and help the world because there are a lot of good people involved in the church. (obviously all just my opinion, but I was raised as a pretty strict Christian). If a new pope came in and started directing the Vatican's resources towards helping fix some of the worlds problems that would do a lot to clean the slate.

I'm torn between hoping for a reformer who can bring the Church's views on homosexuality and women's rights out of the Dark Ages, and hoping for a conservative who will hasten the decline of the Church's relevance in a world that would be better off without it.

I am hoping for a big, cheesy, greasy pizza loaded down in toppings that has zero calories. And I have a better shot at that than your first option.

Interesting note...Father de Souza and family, lived and grew up in Lake Bonavista here in town, he and his sister went to the same elementry and junior high schools as I, though he is 4 or 5 year older (early 40's, though his picture makes him look a lot older).

Back as a kid, he was a soccer referee as well for some of our games. Very smart guy, very nice guy and family.

Carry on.

They are screwing up enough stuff right now, do they really need to take on the church as well?
