You don't understand Mach's comments, that's obvious. I was trying to point you in the correct direction. To suggests Mach ever meant that those players would be better in perpetuity is just wrong and shows you don't understand what you quoted meant.

according to Bob McKenzie, the Oilers have hired Scott Howson as a scout ... so in response to the OP: they'll be bad for a long time.

Jeeezuz.
Peter Principle in action.
The entire Oiler's Franchise is comprised of people incompetent for their positions.

So they spent $15M on those guys and ended up around $28M-30M for the year.
It's also important to note that spending right at the floor didn't really happen back then. Even though they were only a little below the midpoint, Chicago had the 6th lowest payroll in the league in 05-06, spending less than teams like Phoenix, Nashville, New York Islanders, and Atlanta.
|
Thanks for showing some info there, I wasn't sure where to find it.
I don't remember ever hearing about those moves being about "getting to the floor" which is why I'm leery about it now. There were tonnes of signings that off season though so maybe I missed it but this is the first time I'm seeing that argument made. I'm open to it but I don't see it.
Considering how low the cap for is (23 million) I'd say being around 29 million isn't just spending to get to the cap. Obviously with how low the cap was at the time they were on the lower end, but if they were really just spending to get to the cap they would have come in several million dollars less.
Flash and I are going in circles though, I still haven't seen anything to suggest the Hawks had a brilliant move to decide to suck and rebuilt as opposed to sucking and then going with it. That's what happened to them and that's what's happening to the Flames.

1st. It wasn't Mach, it was Melbridgeman.
2nd. His comment was that with that core there is no way the Flames would miss the playoffs in 3 years, and then draft 1st overall.
You misinterpreted my comments on it from today. I wasn't mocking anyone. As an Oiler fan I went down the exact path of denial as some were in that thread. Just a couple good moves and we are turned right around. Just crazy how they mirror.

Finally something we agree on. They bring back MacTavish this off seasons and bring back this guy, the guy that got away and lead his new team to being as bad as his old one?
If Lowe is ever let go MacTavish will be made new GM and Howson assistant.

I think we agree on a good many things.
One of them is that MacT is likely the next GM.

Like seriously, the post you were talking about was saying with these players we will never be as bad as the Oilers. That lineup never was. Like for seriously and stuff.

That's true, hopefully the Flames look north and learn a thing or two about a thing or two. I can barely take the latest three game losing streak, I dunno if I can take three years of it!

Really? In a thread about how can the flames not follow to Oilers path, I read that as..."with a core of these players we will be able to either stay competitive for years or trade them for assets that will keep us competitive. "
Either way what does it matter? We know how it's going... I brought that quote up cause that's how oilers felt in 2007

Ugh, I don't wanna even think about that. The style of play for the Flames this year already reminds me way too much of the Oilers, its very unsettling.
If we do end up going that way, I just hope its during some strong draft years. Comparatively speaking when looking at #1's in previous drafts, it looks like the Oilers picked a bad 3 years to get the first over-all pick.

Oiler fans have been saying that for about 7 years. If the move doesn't involve the overall number 1 pick and the future watch issue of the hockey news your management is completely incapable of a good move.

I come back from a five day trip and find the Flames in a three game losing streak, last in the conference and seriously contending for last in the league. And on the forum people are discussing how bad the Oilers are or were or whatnot.
You know what, I hope the Oilers start ruling, because as long as the Flames and their fans hold one of the biggest jokes on the league as some kind of a relevant bench mark for absolutely anything, the team is going nowhere.

Oilers look like they are going to go 3-4-2 on their road trip, that actually is not bad for them. 14 of their final 21 at home, they might actually end up making a push for a playoff position. I would suspect they will finish around 50 points and just miss the playoffs though.
