Unfortunately, barring the big miracle, they cannot offer him a reasonable shot at winning the Cup within his remaining career horizon. Hence; he would leave only if
a) the real chance of winning SC is more important to him than personal/family discomfort and other nuisances of dealing with public perceptions of his leaving, or
b) if the organization doesn't want him to stay here and wish to spend their money on someone else.
I personally consider option b) unrealistic. All indications from the head office to-date have been that they want him to retire here (unless the recent Francis media "breakout" affair has been staged to get a feel of the public opinion regarding a mere potential of trading Iginla now). So, it's option a) only, I think.

We all realize that the Flames have the ability to outbid any team for his services but I would think that they have enough intellectual honesty not to overpay for a player that isn't helping them win now at 15th in the conference. Iginla at 36 simply isn't worth to the Flames what he would be to a team on the cusp of winning the cup. I'm willing to bet if other teams made offers of $7 million a season that the Flames would in fact let Iginla walk as I'm not sure if even Ken King is this foolish although anything is possible with this club.

If the Flames management needs a prolonged losing streak from this group to correctly identify that they are not a playoff calibre team, they should find jobs in a different industry.
Might as well have VANFLAMESFAN be the GM if the only requirement is optimism bordering on absurdity.

I wouldn't entertain Iginla on this franchise going forward without him taking a significant pay cut, to the tune of 3 million dollars a year or less. Even then, I am at the point now where I just hope whatever avenue it takes, he's not on the franchise going into the draft. This is the Flames though so you can't make predictions on what should happen, usually just the opposite.
Security comes with a price. If the team is going to be a country club retirement home, the very least you can do is not pay top dollar for it.

I don't really care one way or the other if Iginla wants to be traded, but the key point is that it his decision. I would prefer the Flames keep him and trade away other players like Tanguay/Cammi/Giordano/Glencross and get back some younger LARGER players.
Trading Iginla isn't going to restock the cupboards of prospects. A first round pick from Pitts/Boston/Chicago/LA is going to be late 20's anyway and you can at least be entertained by Iginla while still sucking. If they keep him and pick in the top 3 this year they can get the immediate young center they are looking for.
To me the biggest issue the Flames have is not enough of the larger/grittier players, like and LA or Anaheim. If they could pick up a couple of these players for the guys mentioned above I think it speeds things up. Currently Iginla isn't going to get these "assets" back from a trade.Kipper could probably get the same first round pick back from Pitts/Chicago that everyone thinks Iginla is going to get.

Our interpretation of the pink elephant dance was, and continues to be, different than everybody else’s current interpretation as articulated ad nauseam all around the internet and in the media.

Start the rebuilding process with trading any of these players.
Tanguay
Cammy
Glencross
Butler
Bouwmeester ( His trade value would be very high)
Jio
Comeau
Sarich since they are not willing to play him.
Babchuk
Jackman

Here's how I see it. Jarome has earned my respect with the way he's represented Calgary, Canada and the NHL. Whatever he decides to do, I'll support him 100%. He is and always will be one of my favourite and most beloved players in the league. The choice is his, at any time, for any place- for any reason. He's already a hero in my opinion. I wish the best for him and his family, regardless of what he does now or in the future.

What if he held out on a trade before the deadline and then signed with the Vancouver Canucks?

Hey, I would be ok with that, as long as it's not with Detroit. Then I'd only be 99.9% supportive
