one team had a great playoff run and was for the most part a fringe playoff team the rest of the decade, the other is/was (debatable based on the last few weeks) a contender for the better part of the last 5 years

If anything, this Canucks group is 3-4 years away from where the Flames are when you look at Iginla's age vs the Sedins age, and regardless of the rest of the team that has always been one of the big differences between the two teams. The Flames never got anyone to play with their elite winger, the Canucks have always had an elite center to play with theirs.

who knows how the team will look in 3-4 years, no one knows. Edmonton thought they would be a playoff team by now, so did NYI/Florida etc... it's way too difficult to predict that far
Sure I can compare. Sedins, Luongo, Kesler, Burrows, Edler, Bieksa, etc have all seen their career seasons in the rear view mirror. They have collective talent but none of their core players are going to be any better than they are this season and most likely worse as the years go on. Throw in a lack of supporting cast and it's not unreasonable to expect that they may miss the playoffs in the next few seasons. In fact it's nowhere near a given this season as they are 8th place halfway through the season as is. Trust me it's coming and like in Calgary it will get ugly as like I said before this team is locked up as is for a long time.

The D is locked up long term but, of the forwards, only Booth, Kesler and Burrows are signed past next year.

And with the salary cap being reduced not a lot of money to bring in big names as a lot of money has been sunk into goaltending and defense. I'm sure Luongo will likely get dealt but Gillis may have to accept that he's not going to get much of a return. Either way it's already happening in that the Canucks have to look to free agency to upgrade their team much like the Flames because they don't have strong talent in their system.

That's a left turn from your original position.

I'm well aware of the issues with the Canucks. I'm not sure Gillis is the guy that will be able to get the team out of it.

Yep, but on the flip side the Blues and Canucks lost so the Flames are only 6 points back of them. Those teams hold the last 2 playoff spots. It did suck that the Avs were able to get the OT win with less than a second left on the clock and it was a 3 pointer. The Ducks beat the Blues 4-2, Halak isn't looking good. The Wild beat the Canucks 4-2, yay it was a 2 point game. What's with the Bhawks losing to the Oilers 6-5 in reg time? Both teams had their starting goalies taken out of the game, Dubnyk was injured and Emery let 3 goals in during the 1st period. Can't believe the BJs beat the Red Wings again and in Detroit, 3-2 in the SO. In the east, the Devils win 3-2 in the SO over the Jets. The Rangers beat the Capitals 4-1. Ovechkin takes bad penalties. The Habs are rocking in Florida as they defeat the Panthers 5-2 and it sounded like a home game for the Habs. The Flyers squeak out a 3-2 reg win over the Sabres and the Penguins spank the Islaners 6-1.
