The Oilers drafted Hall in 2010 and are going to miss the post season for a third year after drafting him, their 7th in a row. At the time the Penguins and Hawks were playing in the finals the Oilers are again contending for picking first overall, their 4th lottery pick.

The Oilers all pointed to those two teams as shining examples of tanking to improve. It's apparently the exact opposite.

Meanwhile the Oilers have promoted both Kevin Lowe and Craig Mactavish.

Brilliant.
Yup. When saying that, Oiler fans seem to forget that for every Pittsburgh or Chicago who's built through lottery picks, there's a Florida/NY Islanders/Columbus. And if anything, the Oilers clearly look like the latter.

Nice of you to start the penguins drafting with Crosby. Who was there 4th player picked in the top 5.

2002 at 5th overall Ryan Whitney (our gagner at 6th overall)
2003 at 1st overall MAF (taylor hall)
2004 at 2nd overall Malkin (RNH)
2005 at 1st overall Crosby (yakupov)
2006 at 2nd overall J. Stall

So they had all that talent including crosby and still ended up at 29th in the league in 2005-2006.

Who gives a flying coitus at a rolling doughnut about the Grease? The important question is How long will the Flames stay mediocre for! I can't even get up the gumption to vilify the Coil until the Flames start showing something other than lacklustre efforts.

How do you explain the Hawks then?

Toews - Hall
Kane - RNH
Dylan Olsen - Yakupov

Best team in the league by far right now. 6 years after Kane was drafted.

How do you explain the LA Kings? Some of you make it seem like it ELC or bust for this team.

However to turn the corner they need to fire Lowe and company

The Flames will be bad for awhile, the difference is that the Flames actually have future top picks to look forward to. It appears to me that the Oilers missed out on getting franchise players with their first overall picks. It seems doubtful that they have a Stamkos or a Kane or Crosby/Malkin etc. on their hands. Their top guys just do not seem to be dynamic players.

They were the best team in the league 3 years after Kane was drafted.

And they are the best team again.

When teams get home run players with top picks they can improve very quickly, unfortunately for the Oilers they failed to get a legitimate superstar with any of their first overall picks. They are good players, just not good enough to be superstars.

Malkin wasn't on the team in 05-06 and Crosby put up 102 points in his rookie season which was double the next highest scoring forward on his team; I don't really see a comparable for either of those things on the Oilers this year.

That and the last 3 players picked were all elite centers. The Oilers' future hope for the center ice position is currently scoring at a 29 point pace at the same age that Crosby was putting up 120 points.

Will this ever happen though? In the 7+ years I've been living here, it blows my mind how little pressure Oiler management seems to have on it by media/fans. Calgary's obviously had its own struggles in recent years, and look how much heat the local fans/media put on them. In Edmonton there's nothing.

It's not like there isn't any expectations up here either. The last couple years, Oiler fans/media DO expect the beginning of big things. Hell, SI picked them 5th over-all in pre-season power rankings, and Vegas had them very high as well. This town was electric leading into the season. But as soon as the wheels fall off, its "oh well, they're young. Next year though, THE BOYZ ARE BACK IN TOWN!!!"

It's pathetic how little pressure to succeed locally there is here on Oiler players/management, despite all the expectations.

Absolutely. Thankfully for fans of opposing teams Katz seems in love is old boys club. He'll promote Kevin Lowe, and put a puppet GM in place. Hell even when Craig MacTavish is let go, the bring him back three years later and give him a promotion.

Well run organization, from the owners down.

The pressure is mounting now. The fans were willing to give them the time, and it looked like they were going in the right direction. But if they end up last again there will be an uproar.

I honestly do not see where the pressure is mounting from. Certainly not the media, they are in the Oilers back pocket. The building is sold out every night, where is the pressure mounting from?

I know! It's bad when feaster tries to give away draft picks and 2.5 million for free, and I'm not 100% sure if he is worse then out management.

Meh. Not sure I would say none of the first ov's won't be superstars. Hall is ppg in his third season. Tavares for example didn't really explode until this, his 4th season.

So is it an oilers vs penguins? Oilers vs Blackhawks? Just saying that the oilers management stinks.

Those are comparisons of the rebuild from scratch approach the oilers. Really, oilers fans should be happy that it is the pens/hawks being compared to, not the islanders, jackets, or panthers, I think it is time to begin the debate on whether that is where this rebuild is headed.
