Not to mention throwing 15 second ads in before face-offs, the banner ads on the glass, and text competitions. It all looks so bush league compared to TSN.

I don't mind the ads, I just hate how Sportsnet rarely ever makes it back in time to see a faceoff.

It really just bothers me after a penalty or something where any other channel would be showing a replay. Instead we get an ad for sports select, and then back to the game just in time to see that the Flames have lost the ensuing faceoff.

I was chatting with a friend of mine who works at CTV, and theoretically if Rogers wanted they could put Peter's audio on SAP (Second Audio Program).
Not sure if Rogers has an SAP on the broadcast, but they could theoretically.

I have Bell and mine is delayed as well. Strange that some people with Bell delays and others with Bell doesn't.
Maybe some people just don't pay close enough attention. That would be about the only explanation I could see.

Now, the technical issues are one thing that shouldn't be happening as it shouldn't really be a cost thing, but slagging Snet for extra ads, or comparing to TSN for not having them, is unfair.
The reason there's the extra ads the and advertising sponsor texting competition; the production costs game by game in the same ball park as TSN...except SNet West is doing 80% of the Flames games, in a limited TV market with limited ad dollars to offset the cost of production.
On the other side, TSN has national contract and can attract large advertising dollars as a result, which doesn't mean they have to do those extra ad opportunities (although I am sure its coming eventually) week in and week out on the national games (which overall total far less then the 60 games SNet does for the Flames)
Same can be said for content...getting the Wednesday night TSN game once a week, or, if you just watch Flames games 8-10 times in a regular 82 game season on TSN, you can handle the panel. If we had to put up with the TSN panel (which would switch around too, no way they could get that same crew every game for 60 games) 60 times a season, they'd wear on us too.
Snet/ the Flames could go back to a PPV model, or, not show all the games, and probably would have to if a major sponsor or two like Telus pulled out and Snet didn't get that ad revenue replaced to make the games, at most, a break even proposition to put on air.
Its basically a quantity vs quality thing. TSN has the national contract and visability, so it can attract the quality talent who will have that national stage for the game a week. With that national stage and views, mean advertisers will choose that to put their $. Snet regionally has to scrape for sponsors and find analysts and talent that are content with being a regional guy, and not having that national stage...and have to work two or three games a week in front of the smaller audience, as opposed to TSN's one.

I am not sure about that. Most video feeds have a signifcant delay, so delaying it on a pvr would make the gap worse. In addition to that Maher is broadcast over the air on am radio which is basically instant, and you can't delay him. I have tried all kinds of tricks to delay the 960 broadcast and it is always ahead of my video feed. ( Telus)

I forget why I was doing it but I used this trick some years ago but I was using the 960 feed from my computer. IIRC I delayed the PVR about 10 seconds. Nowadays I just use the PVR to skip the most irritating commercials and for bathroom breaks, answering the phone, etc.

I realize I'm responding to a post from March but this argument would work better if some of the US regional broadcasts that probably get 1/10th of the viewership of the Flames on Sportsnet didn't have better quality and announcers.

The original reasoning was that the in-glass ads caused the delay. However one would think any competent broadcast crew could delay the audio to match the video delay.
Pretty sure the other Sportsnet broadcast regions don't have this issue.

Also the fact that Rogers owns Sportsnet, there really shouldn't be any shortage of dough. Especially when you're talking about something as simple as syncing the audio with the play.
If they can't figure it out, shut off the commentators. Its better like that anyways.

Is it out of sync with every camera or just the main one where you see the virtual ads?

Our Budweiser light was right on time for the first game of the season, ever since then it seems to always be 5-10 seconds late.

You need to grab the " Tune In" radio app. It's free and acts like a PVR for your audio streams. You stream Maher using the Fan 960, route it through your bluetooth speaker (or just play it off your mobile device), and then sync it up with the TV broadcast, by putting it on pause until the play catches up.
It's glorious, because the play by play actually MATCHES the game! Also, you get HOF'er Peter Maher, instead of whoever happens to be working for SN this year.
(actually I have no issue with Kerr and Simmer... except their play calls are ahead of the game - which is just too stupid for words).
