They either wait and match or wait and don't match and still gain the picks. This news wouldn't really affect Colorado's decision

Sounds like nobody (Flames, Avs, NHL, O'Reilly's agent, other GMs) were aware he would've had to pass thru waivers if Avs didn't match.
I was just thinking that ROR should consider firing his agent for also being inept. He could have taken offer sheets off the table by not keeping his client informed. Luckily for him NHL GM's don't seem much brighter.

I want a GM who exploits little known technicalities in the CBA, not one who suffers as a result of them.

Is that too much to ask?

Re-entry waivers were eliminated in the new CBA.

Do you think his trade value, considering his contract, would be much better than the Flames 1 & 3?

He will be gone. Why? People want blood now.

Will give you a real life example.

I work in a business that runs data centers which service customers.A few years back we had a couple really good guys go into a DC and pull a couple of cables they didn't think were live. But they were, and caused an outage to customers.

Our VP tried to keep them but our customers wanted blood. In the end they were walked out the door as tangible evidence we were correcting the problem.

Feaster just hung himself big time, the backlash is going to be huge. Blood will need to be shed on this one, bank on it.

And to get him in the lineup ASAP. I have heard the trade deadline is going to be late February next year.

Therefore, the Avs can sign the contract with O'Reilly and not waive him, whereas the Flames would've had to do so in order for him to play this season. Simple matter.
That's not what the CBA says:

Quote:
13.23 In the event a professional or former professional Player plays in a league outsideNorth America after the start of the NHL Regular Season, other than on Loan from his
Club, he may thereafter play in the NHL during that Playing Season (including Playoffs)
only if he has first either cleared or been obtained via Waivers. For the balance of the
Playing Season, any such Player who has been obtained via Waivers may be Traded or
Loaned only after again clearing Waivers or through Waiver claim."

"All Players on a Club’s Reserve List and Restricted Free Agent List will be exempt from the
application of CBA 13.23 Waivers in the case of a mid-season signing.

For further clarity, if Club A trades such a Player to Club B and Club B signs the Player to an SPC,
such Player will be exempt from the application of CBA 13.23."

The quote specifically says "on the Restricted Free Agency list". It does not say formlerly on the RFA list. O'Reilly has signed an offer sheet with the Avs. By the interpreation they're giving, he's no more on their RFA list than he would have been on ours.

Avs could have got something else out of the Flames if they waited...They would have traded him from their RFA list. Better than letting him go to the Jackets

No, he would've been an Avalanche. They would have first dibs on the player they lost.

Just like if the Flames choose/chose to send McDonald down to Abby, the Wings would have first dibs.
