Spector's Hockey @SpectorsHockey
Sounds like nobody (Flames, Avs, NHL, O'Reilly's agent, other GMs) were aware he would've had to pass thru waivers if Avs didn't match.

The more people who were ignorant of this (and right now it pretty much seems like everyone) the less incentive there is to fire any one of them.

According to Feaster (and I realize the shakiness of so doing), there were other offer sheets for him yesterday. Maybe it wasn't the Canucks. But when pressed as to why they made the offer yesterday, it's because they felt if they didn't, he would have signed with another team.
My guess is the interpretation of this rule is, at least, uncertain right now. Also interesting legal issues with how binding the MOU is on something like this.

Yeah... the Avs should learn their lesson, wait a few days next time.

The matched quickly so that O'Reilly can be traded next year by the deadline if they so choose.

This. While disasterous if true, I refuse to call for Feaster's head until this is actually confirmed. And frankly this wouldn't be the first time we (myself included) went nuts about something that turned out to be incorrect. Happy thoughts...

Sounds like if it happened the Flames probably would have been able to resolve it because of the ambiguity of the new CBA, with the league not even knowing that the player would have had to pass through waivers. Probably wouldn't have been able to play until next season though, so that 1st round pick could have ended up being a pretty good one.

Of course...that's what being a free agent means. Its the only way to have a player sign an offer sheet as well.

Ryan O'Reilly's agent, Pat Morris, just told @TSNRadio1050 that he didn't know his client would head to waivers if Colorado didn't match.
Bruce Arthur @bruce_arthur
Morris also said a number of other teams inquired about offer sheets. Presumably, none of them knew either, or they would have told him.

I still don't think it makes it alright. The PR mess has been done, and only Calgary's name will be attached to it.

This better not be the Flames excuse for holding onto Feaster.
Who really cares if anyone else knew? The Flames offered the contract so it's on them to make themselves aware of these things.

Could have waited a day still. Trade deadline March 4-11? Could have set up a deal, the drop the hammer March 3 or something.

What role does O'Ryan's agent have in this? Is he not responsible for understanding what the terms his player is subject to?
