The 2.5 is paid upon the contract taking effect. If they waited 7 days, that 2.5 million is due on that 7th day.
Colorado matching will have had to pay out the 2.5 immediately as far as I am aware.
Flames would've lost the 1st and 3rd, 2.5 million and the player.

I checked the KHL game sheets, he wasn't on the Jan 21st game sheet, but alas, he did play 15 minutes on January 23rd, so that checks out as well.

Damn, as if losing ROR, 1st and 3rd isn't enough.... the $2.5M is just a square kick in the balls.
Would we have to take the cap hit too?

2.5mil nothing for the Calgary Flames & 1st and 3rd picks in the best draft in 15 years... no biggie!

How does Feaster put it all the time, they want intelligent players..... Maybe they should start with intelligent management....

What could Feaster say to fans by way of explanation?
"We had it on good authority the Colorado Avalanche would very likely match the offer. What I said about O'Reilly being a franchise player, was just bafflegab. Suffice it to say, we had our reasons for tendering the offer sheet."
Of course, he won't claim anything of the kind. But that's the only way he could justify such a clusterbuck of epic proportions.

The GM is the guy that King and the owners trust that the hockey operations side of things and the league's technicalities and legalities are correct before proceeding with anything.
Feaster (his lawyer being an ironic twist in this) is the head of that department, and his sign off on this to put it up the chain is the trust that those above him and have given him.
An absolute embarrasment, and debacle. Obscure rule or not, when you're going to stick your neck out with $10m and two draft picks on something as rare as an offer sheet, you better know everything you're doing.
There is 1% of me that makes me think that Feaster did Lacroix a favour here...the wording that the Avs GM said last night in his PC describing matching the offer (which Neil Smith ripped him for), now tied in with this news, almost makes it seem palatable that this was part of Colorado's strategy.

I think I've gone crazy from all the craziness the last 2 days. Nothing about this team fazes me anymore. I'm sitting here at my desk and don't know whether to lol or cry. But I choose to laugh about it. What else can I do? We have the ineptitude of the Isles and Oilers. Everyone is laughing at us. And the GM of Colorado literally saved our franchise from utter shame/disgrace. CAN'T WAIT TO SEE WHAT HAPPENS NEXT!!!

Feaster should get fired so they can Hire Burke because he has super close ties to Getzlaf........
We did it with feaster a year before Richards became UFA. Why change now!

Can we change the poll options now?
Avs match, keep O'Reilly
Avs don't match, take the picks and the Flames get embarrassed.
Should bingo be fired?

One of the perks of being a franchise rich with young talent is that you can let a guy like O'Reilly hold out. But Feaster forced the Avs to pay O'Reilly what he thought he was worth -- so I see it as a win-win for the Flames. Stil would have been an interesting acquisition had the Avs not matched, though. But atleast the Flames still have their first round pick.
|
How is it a win win except it increases the chances of Flames getting a higher pick in this and next year's draft?

It's a technicality that Feaster shouldn't have missed. Or he should have hired a capologist or someone to advise him. And please name an example of another "guy making decisions to do things like this."

I wonder if Columbus would have claimed ROR off the waiver, since they would have first dibs.

Among competing hypotheses, the one that makes the fewest assumptions should be selected.
Feaster is an idiot.

Highly doubt it. His contract isn't that great and the Jackets aren't about to spend $6.5 million a year on ROR.

ROR + 3 x 1st round picks this year = instant rebuild for Columbus.
