If Avs didn't match, do we have to activate him? Could we just let him stay home so he didn't have to clear waiverS?

I will wait for some explanation from the team before I make judgement. If they did miss that little tid bit and it wasn't a part of helping COL out, then yeah, fire away.

If this truly ends up being the case, then yes, action needs to be taken here.

Definitely goes a long way towards explaining the reported smile on his face when told that Colorado had matched.

Wow. That is frightening. It seemed like Feaster et al had the offer figured out pretty well - tried to install a poison pill, difficulty of trading him (trade deadline 2014), highest offer possible with current picks, etc. To not run this by an internal or external CBA ninja (or just the league) is crazy.
Who would have had a shot at O'Reilly if he did hit waivers, assuming the Flames maintained their current spot in the standings? The teams lower in the standings?

Avalanche would have lost O'Reilly. Washington would have gotten him. Or whoever is last.
Maybe the Avalanche wanted him more then the picks.
Either way. This piece of info is hilarious.

I'm not sure wanting to give away a 1st and 3rd round pick for quite likely nothing can be considered a forgivable "oops" moment

New motto replacing every game matters.
We started with nothing and now have most of that left over.

Hmmm looks like O'Reilly was still under contract until Feb. 24 but didn't actually play any games after Feb. 17th.
Weird technicality there.
Edit: Did play on the 21st and 23rd...Feaster is an idiot.

Hopefully the Flames see that and rid themselves of this stupidity instead of keeping them on like those two teams.

I'm a pretty optimistic guy about the flames, but if this is actually true....wow. I'm not sure how you can go forward without firing Feaster? That would of been a huge mistake.

Either way, embarrassing and Feaster needs to be sent packing.

That's what I thought at first, but after reading the actual rule it says that he would have to clear waivers before playing in the NHL or being loaned to another team. The Flames would basically have to convince O'Reilly to simply refuse to report and leave this year on the table so they could suspend him. I seriously doubt he would agree.

I wonder if it was as simple an error of looking to see if he had played since the lockout ended, didn't see the name Ryan O'Reilly come up on game sheets and thought they were in the clear. Why they wouldn't just ask O'Reilly or his agent is another question though. Most likely they either had a plan for this or Feaster is the biggest idiot in the NHL. Please be the former.

Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
For those asking, yes, my understanding is if COL hadn't matched CGY offer on O'Reilly, CGY would have had to put him on waivers to play now
Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
What's fascinating is that a change in the new CBA is all that separated COL from having to put O'Reilly on waivers now to get him in lineup

A favor to the Avs to get O'Reilly signed in exchange for a price break for a future trade (Statsny, Duchene (dare to dream))?
Maybe a little backroom handshake between Feaster and Sherman to scratch each others' backs?
