That would have created a potentially disastrous situation where the Flames had to send two decent draft picks to Colorado before losing the rights to O’Reilly immediately afterwards. Hypothetically, it could even have been the Avalanche that ended up putting in a waiver claim on the player, assuming that they dropped back below Calgary in the standings by the time he hit the wire at the end of next week.
|
When a player is put on waivers, 29 teams can put a claim in regardless of whether they are below the waiving club in standing.s

If this is true Feaster better have a good explanation. It's his job to know all the rules and consequences of his actions.

If that is true, then one only can shake their head. What was he going to do have O'Reilly not report, or just flush the picks in the toilet.

Reminds me when Chicago forgot to qualify some of its RFAs in time, even though they were a recent cup winner, if I recall correctly Dave Tallon was dismissed shortly after for the oversight.

I'm not anti-Feaster by any stretch... but that's a fireable offense if true.

The article suggests the NHL itself wasn't even aware. Though even if the team did go to the league first and say "so this is kosher, right?" and got a faulty affirmative, it would only spread the blame rather than absolve Feaster of it.

I'm also not sure its true... he's not a UFA.. he's an RFA. Why wouldn't the same rule apply to the Avs?

So realistically, which centre does Feaster go after now? Krecji has been brought up, Richards(please god no), Brassard and maybe Weiss. They all would be an immediate improvement but I guess part of what made me excited about ROR was he was responsible in his own end.

I never had faith in Feaser. I think he has a low hockey IQ. If this article is true then yes he should be fired.

That is pretty bad if true, but wouldn't he still have to go through waivers to play fo the Avs this season? He was still a free agent that was playing in Europe after the deadline. Does it matter which team signed him, or does the team that owns the rights get a break on that?
Also, couldn't the Flames have just decided to not activate him, but loan him to Europe for the rest of the season as a worst case scenerio?
At any rate, I agree that he should be fired if this comes out to be true. That would have been a disaster and gives me no faith in him.

It's not.
The waiver rule for overseas signings were changed in the new CBA.
Does SportsNet really believe an NHL GM would make such a huge mistake?
There's a reason TSN doesn't have that "exclusive" and it's because it's wrong.

I think Brassard is realistic but that isn't splashy enough for Feaster. He seems fine having once center on the team and only addressing it if it's a big name. Brassard would be a good pickup and not that expensive - oh and his upside is pretty damn high.

If anyone looks like an idiot here, it's Sherman and the Avs.
Player rumored to want $4.5 million AAV
Avs rumored to want to only pay $3.5 million AAV
They leave him sit, ruin their relationship with the player, weaken their team, ask way too much in trade scenarios, create or magnify locker room issues between said player and his team mates.
Then immediately match an offer sheet that pays the player $5.0 million AAV........which is actually MORE than the player was even asking for to begin with, and thrust him back into a precarious situation with an organization that the kid clearly doesn't want anything to do with anymore.
Yeah, great GMing you tool.

what shots did he take?

Loisng a 1st round pick on a a waiver wire technicality would have potentially set this franchise back several years.

The NHL has shown it will bend its own rules, so this point does introduce the possibility that the league would have allowed the Flames to sign O'Reilly without waivers.
However, in the case of Radulov, he was already under contract to Nashville, so the situation was quite different.
