I stopped short of guaranteeing that they wouldn't match, but I am surprised they did.
I don't think matching was strictly a hockey decision though. With Duchesne and Landeskog approaching their RFA windows, I don't think the Avs wanted the reputation of being a team that could be pushed over. The next team to try and swipe an RFA from them might think twice if they think Colorado will match regardless of how silly the offer is.
I don't think Colorado is at all happy about getting O'Reilly for what they did though. They were in a damned if they do, damned if they don't situation. I'm glad they matched though. This had "Penner" written all over it.

Am I the only one who thinks that Feaster should have signed O'Reilly to a long term contract so that the Avs would be less likely to match?

I think we did really well with the contract - making it hard for the Avs to match, and making it tough on them when he hits RFA in a couple years (if he isn't traded before).
I really like this offer sheet for numerous reasons.

If he offered a long term 5 mil per year deal it would have been easier for the Avs to match. If he offered 6.5 per year (which he couldn't offer given our draft picks) the compensation would have been more, and it wouldn't have been as good of a deal as a 1st and a 3rd. The offer sheet by Feaster was perfect
I am shocked that the Avs matched the offer sheet. I think that it cripples them as a franchise, and they are going to be a divided team for 365 days, not to mention they might have to go through this again in a year (after paying ROR 8 million spiteful dollars). Every RFA they sign now is going to ask for more money going forward. Terrible GM'ing by them
Solid move by Feaster all around

Adam Proteau @Proteautype RUMOR: Flames GM Jay Feaster interested in signing Chicago Blackhawks to an offer sheet.
Don't think this is a reliable source, still interesting to share.

Lets just thank our lucky stars the avs matched that ridiculous desperate offer by feaster.

I dunno why he would takes shots at Feaster, or why anyone would for that matter.
If anyone looks like an idiot here, it's Sherman and the Avs.
Player rumored to want $4.5 million AAV
Avs rumored to want to only pay $3.5 million AAV
They leave him sit, ruin their relationship with the player, weaken their team, ask way too much in trade scenarios, create or magnify locker room issues between said player and his team mates.
Then immediately match an offer sheet that pays the player $5.0 million AAV........which is actually MORE than the player was even asking for to begin with, and thrust him back into a precarious situation with an organization that the kid clearly doesn't want anything to do with anymore.
Yeah, great GMing you tool.

at the end of the day, he has O'Reilly and Feaster doesn't, so he wins.
These continued failures should not be excused. This is the NHL - you don't get a trophy for trying your best and failing. Feaster needs to address the problems of this team, and he has undeniably failed. The standings show it, the public failures of Richards and O'Reilly show it - this is a bad hockey team with a management team in place that has proven itself incapable of turning it into a good team.
There's no magic fix, no matter how hard Feaster looks for it. There's not some clever move that will magically turn this 14th place team into a NW Division champion.

I think that is still to be determined. If O'Reilly doesn't take the next step, that contract is going to look terrible. Not to mention the effect it will have on the economics of their team.
Everyone is a loser today. The Avs just had the power to decide in what way they wanted to lose.

Agree that the Avs look dumb in this whole thing. If you're just going to match the offer in 10 minutes why keep low-balling the guy. Come up with something reasonable instead of letting another team screw around with your salary structure.
They've got Duchene, Landeskog, Stastny and now O'Reilly all coming up on the end of their contracts at the same time. O'Reilly has to be qualified at 6.5 million. Are Landeskog and Duchene going to take less money than him? Plus they've got David Jones, Parenteau, Erik Johnson and Hejda all over 3 million cap hits in that year already.

I'm also extremely worried with jay feaster running the team now. He's making desperate attempts, he's clearly not in tune with the team as we are a team in shambles and he continues to go out and try and significantly over pay for inferior talent. Even worse is that our 1st round pick is in play as it was last year, but we are heading into a deep draft with a chance of not picking until round 3. The patch it up somehow and win now is going to cripple this organization for 5 plus years c

If this is true, Feaster should be fired.
