Wouldn't mind this if it was any other draft year. Not very comfortable given how wonderful this year is shaping up to be.

The way Stajan is playing this year, he's worth $3.5. You're not going to get a centre who can play top six minutes for less on the market.
And based on this year, I'd move Giordano before Bouwmeester. Though with Wideman and Gio signed long term, they do make good anchors for the future blue line.

I'd still see Stajan as a trade target. He'll only have one year and is able to move throughout the line. Attractive with a lower salary at about $2.5M I believe.

Personally I don't care about salaries, as a fan it's just the cap hit. If we are talking about it though Kipper's salary drops by 4 million next year.

But getting a good two-way center who is still very young is pretty attractive for a fan who watches a team with the worst collection of centers in the league.
Still not sure what to think. Just hope that 1st rounder doesn't turn out to be a high pick.
|
The Flames have never picked in any of those spots to date, I wouldn't be too worried. Stillman, Tkaczuk, & Fata were the results from the highest drafting position in franchise history anyway.
In any case, it's entirely possible the Flames could bust another 6th overall, or any spot in the first round for that matter.

Avs are my other favorite team as I grew up watching them. O'Reilly has been one of my favorite players the past few years, it's disappointing that Avalanche management constantly plays hard ball with their young players in contract situations. That said, O'Reilly is absolutely not worth 6.5M and I would be surprised if he ever develops into a player that is worth that. He will be a very good NHLer but I don't see him with the offensive upside to be a #1C. Avs chose Landeskog over O'Reilly for captain, take the picks and run.
I would have to seriously consider getting an O'Reilly jersey if he does become a Flame

How about Iggy signs elsewhere? This move is not a 'get Jarome a center' play. This is a 'we can't win a championship without at least two excellent centres. Here's one' play. We get another good year of development from Backlund and Jankowski, and we're that much closer to true contention. But it's going to be without Jarome. He just doesn't have the time left.

From the whole 2009 Draft class, O'Rielly sits 4th in scoring with 107 points.
Only behind Tavares, Evander Kane, and Matt Duchene.

How big of an impact do Flames fans think a guy who has played 12 games in the last 11 months will have on the Flames chances in the final 27 games of the season?

Great move! Can be an effective player in the now as well as for years to come. The epitome of a "rebuild on the fly" move!
Losing the draft picks are a little worrisome. However, depending on how the team fares in the next few weeks we do have some assets we can trade to re acquire some higher picks if need be.

Voted for Kodos

If Colorado matches:
Postives:
No really big deal, but hurts team in division with potential high qualifying offer.
Negatives:
Perhaps improves a team fighting for a playoff spot with you - as Colorado may have ROR sit out the season. (some may see this as a positive.
If Colorado doesn't match:
Positves:
-Calgary has picked up a very good young 2 way centre with high upside.
-Assuming that the Flames would be drafting in the 10-20 range again, ROR is as good as the player Calgary would be drafting, but a much surer thing.
-Picking him up doesn't really hurt either way if the Flames push for playoffs, or try and sell. ROR could be an important piece going forward either way.
Negatives:
Risk of perpetually overpaying him to keep him on the team.
Risk of losing out on a really high pick (but I don't think that is likely)
What I think:
Sure there is a risk of this turning bad, but I think that that risk is low. If ROR can play every season like he did last season, he's a very useful player to have on any team. He's 21, and may yet improve.
I think that Colorado likely matches, making all of this somewhat pointless.
But if Colorado doesn't match we've picked up a piece of the puzzle that we need, and who will likely be a better player than what we gave up to get him.

Timing is very curious...why not in 12-18 hours, after you play that team? Because the Canucks had one out there too?
I do like the timing of the trade deadline next year...if Colorado doddles, they may not be able to trade him at all. Forcing them into an early decision.
I am with KFF about the player and the potential cost and warming up to it a bit I guess. Any pick outside of the top 8 and it may be worth it if ROR progresses and gets his head on straight. But $6.5 next year, sight unseen?
And sure, a bold move by Feaster, but, like Lowe was with Vanek and Penner, you get the sense he doesn't have many options around the league willing to do business, to pry and top 6 centre off another team, as he's probably tried, not just this season, reacting to the situation they are in, but ever since the trade deadline last year (or further back, trying to land Richards) when he could plainly see it was going to be an issue.

C'mon, I just threw it out there as an idea, the context was a thread about signing Jason Arnott. I said I'd rather offersheet O'Reilly.
Never for a second did I actually evaluate the compensation of the offer sheet required to get the player

So, at that point we could look at it as:
In: O'Reilly
Out: Cammaleri, 1st rounder (like top 10) and 3rd rounder
It also essentially takes us out of the free agent market next year.

Yeah, that's a tough one... Babchuk get's bought out easy. Stajan's taken some stink off of himself but is still an option. There is the possibility that Kipper retires (or is traded). Also the possibility that Iginla isn't here (or signs a deal worth less then his current AAV).

You were suggesting it's a given. It's far from that.
It's a calculated risk for sure, but if it's not a top five pick (which is more likely at this point) adding O'Reilly is a huge pickup.
There is just no need for you to take the more unlikely outcome and cast judgement using it like it's factual.
