The thing is where the flames ever going to have the shot at a franchise player? Ownership mandate is to compete now. That's not changing whether we like it or not. The odds were pretty high that they would be buyers at the deadline to make sure they could sneak in.
I can't say i like the direction of the team but until one of us comes up with $300 million there is not much we can do about it.
Now that this has happened we need to win to make sure they are not getting a good draft pick. Flames can always make trades at the draft to recoupe a pick.

If we fail to make the playoffs then I hope we trade Bo, Gio, Iginla, and Kipper.

YES!!!!
Feaster finally pulled his head out of his behind.
Fantastic move, even if COL matches. Definitely worth a try.
But if we lose our 1st, they're going to need to pull a biggy to recoup that. They'll HAVE to.

In 2010 it was Feb 28th, so it will be close but its s till adds to the gamble, the potential that Colorado can't trade him during his contract will give Sherman something to think about.

I guess this means we can all start hoping the Flames actually win games this year (rather than some of us hoping for the tank job).
Gutsy move by management. I don't know how its gonna work out, but this was a big play.

As if this day couldn't make #Flames fans puff out chest any more.... Was just told by source that #Canucks also issued Offer sheet.
Okay, scrap what I said before... Turned down the Canucks? I like this guy.

|
I'm on the fence, but there's such a small sample size of offer sheets, I don't know how much stock I'd put in that. Conversely, the Flames being absolutely garbage at the draft and never being bad enough to get a surefire franchise player, history shows we'd blow the 1st rounder anyways.

Someone compared him to Conroy. Great comparison. That's what he is and there is nothing wrong with that. But you don't pay him $6.5 M.

Out of thanks, but you have a good point. It's definitely a risky move, but I like it. Hopefully he shows last season wasn't a fluke and he's just a late bloomer.
I still think they match though.

I don't know what it is. Maybe it's the TSN hype machine of draft day, but the hard-on for draft picks is ridiculous. Look at every previous draft in history (except for 2003) and there usually has been a total of 2 or 3 guys out of the first round that are legitimate all stars and maybe 10-20 guys total in the whole draft that are regular contributing NHLers for their teams. If our first round pick ended up turning into a decent 2nd line centre at the age of 20 with the potential to become a first liner in a few years, I would be elated. This is why, I love this move and hope Colorado doesn't match.

Ryan O'Reilly Faceoffs:
2011/12 - 1443 faceoffs, 52.8%
2010/11 - 1025 faceoffs, 51.8%
2009/10 - 1014 faceoffs, 47.8%
He is gradually improving and taking more draws.

The deadline was on March 3rd in 2010. The Gold Medal hockey game was on Feb. 28th, so the trade deadline certainly wasn't that day.

Feaster has been in GM circles for a decade and a half, and in his time as Flames GM alone, has made deals with 12 different franchises. I think there are reasons for people to dislike Feaster that don't require making things up.

Now we add a top young centre (not a shot at a top young centre like a draft pick is, a proven top young pivot)... and we get kipper back.
You're just not looking at the big picture.
The opportunity to trade what will likely be a top 10-20 pick for one of the proven best young defensive centres in the game is a very good calculated risk.
It's a move that helps the team now, and gives them a top young 22 year old centre to build with for the future.
|
No but we could have traded Iggy and/or Kipper which a) would have got us more picks/young players and b) would increase the odds of top 5 pick.
Now that is off the table and Iggy and Kipper aren't getting any more valuable.
This is a bad move.
I'd take a top 10 pick (minimun) and the return from Iggy and/or Kipper this season (assuming Kipper gets it together after injury) over O'Reily any day of the week.
Now we're either losing Jarome for nothing or extending him.

IMHO O'Reilly is a less talented version of Ryan Kelser. He doesn't quite have his skill level or play making ability. That doesn't project to be a top line centre.
Is that worth a First, Third and the Money (lots of people seem to be forgetting about the $$$)?

Calgary can afford it. Love the move. I love you Feaster.
|
I can safely say they will not be calling Calgary to help them out if the decide to match. They would probably trade Stastny for a 7th round pick before calling Calgary.
Won't matter no chance Av's match.
O Reilly is a flame in 7 days.
