I agree, it is impressive. However, he has NEVER scored more than 19 goals professionally or in junior. You don't pay a top flight defensive centerman $6.5 M per year. What's worse is what are you paying him when he is 28? $8M?
Someone compared him to Conroy. Great comparison. That's what he is and there is nothing wrong with that. But you don't pay him $6.5 M.

I haven't watched enough of O'Reilly to judge his upside, but I really like:
1. That he's a centre;
2. That he's young;
3. That other GMs think his market value was greater than a 1st and 3rd.
I don't see the Flames finishing in the bottom 5 of the league, so my appraisal of the risk isn't as high as others. That being said, that second year contract is daunting.
It'll be an interesting few days

There are a lot of question marks with O'Reilly.
|
Absolutely it's a risk - a risk that could go either way.
Not following the people who are angry that this is counter to rebuilding though because O'Reilly has fewer question marks than most first round picks because he has played well in the NHL for three years and already put up respectable numbers. Hinges upon where that first round pick actually is which of course is mostly tied to how the Flames do the rest of the season.
No matter what happens, enormous pressure on O'Reilly but especially if he ends up in Calgary.

How does this work if Colorado doesn't match?
Is he playing as an RFA without a contract?

Isn't it nice that our gm's 'desperation save my job move' is to go get Ryan O'Reilly and address the #1 C position, instead of bringing in Chris Higgens and Kotalik.

I don't think we were getting into the top 3 without winning the lottery. If we finish with around the 10th pick, I'd rather have ROR than trade down and select a project like Jankowski.
There's a certain amount of security in having an established player like ROR... basically you're drafting him, just with a couple years development through another team's system.

flames just swung for the fences. kinda hoping colorado matches, cause this has high possibility of ripping us. The excitement is fun, but this is really a gritty play.
I like the Flames being aggressive, but you gotta be savvy for when you take your shot.

If it ends up being a top 4 (MacKinnon, Jones, Barkov, Drouin), then we'll be a laughing stock. This is a huge gamble. We are as close to a top 4 pick right now as we are to just squeaking into the playoffs.
|
As someone else has mentioned, adding ROR, Backlund and Kipper probably pushes us closer to the 9th and 10th spot, possibly into 8th spot territory.
That being said, if the Flames tank even with ROR, it's not like Feaster can't off load Iginla, Tanguay, Cammalleri for picks in this year's draft?
Basically if ROR signs, then Feaster has given us a Centre position of O'Rielly, Backlund and Janokowski in two-three years.

Rather have a shot a franchise player in this draft than throw it away for O'Reilly. Don't like this.

Only way this works is if the rebuild is in fact on. We need those picks back and Oreilly can become the captain.

Odds of the Avs matching the offer and shopping Statsny instead. My Av's fan buddy said the lack of signing seems to be more of a depth centre problem not a salary problem.

The Flames have never drafted in the top 5. When they have drafted in the top 10, there has been one success and a whole bunch of failures.
Anybody who criticizes this move for anything other than the $$$ given to ROR (which I'll admit, is very high), is crazy

Remember O'Reilly gets $2.5 million just to sign today.
|
Not only that, but apparently the relationship between the O'Reilly camp, and the Avs has deteriorated completely. I also heard a media guy saying on the radio a couple weeks ago that he didn't think O'Reilly would even be welcome back in the Avs dressing room, and that he and Duchene do not like each other much at all.
Would be crazy for the Avs to match, and then stick him back in their dressing room for the next year because they can't trade him.
Going to be a long week haha.

A young 1st line centre. Not a second liner.

This was the wrong year to do this. It's clear what we are now and what management wants. Ignore 3+ years of lessons and waffle around until Iginla retires and we bottom out.
