So we put in an aggressive offer for a proven young center (yes yes he was only the top point getter on the Avs for 1 year) and people complain about his cap hit (which won't necessarily matter next year depending on players will be coming off the books) and losing a completely unknown 1st round pick and a 3rd. Jesus people.
Bird in the hand is worth two in the bush boys.
Love the move. Love making a move to try to improve this team based on actual players and not some unknown draft pick who would be the 2nd coming of Jesus or Rico Fata's brother Jimmy Fata.

Someone compared him to Conroy. Great comparison. That's what he is and there is nothing wrong with that. But you don't pay him $6.5 M.

The money is very concerning especially with the cap going down and the fact that they are basically tied to having to pay him that. I will say to the 19 goals, O'Reilly is absolutely a late bloomer. A second pick who had never put a PPG in OHL who makes the NHL at age 18 and puts up 55 at 21. A very mature, well-rounded game but it will hinge upon how much offensive upside he has. Definite late-bloomer.

Hopefully the Flames can use the draft pick on a guy that gets 50+ points by the age of 21.

Would be crazy for the Avs to match, and then stick him back in their dressing room for the next year because they can't trade him.
Going to be a long week haha.

I imagine if they didn't think they could integrate him back onto the team they would've traded him a while ago.

We couldn't be further from the Oilers: our management is actually gambling on us finishing higher than expected.
Whether or not that pays off is the question.

Why exactly do people think that our first be a top 3 / top 5 pick?!
We are 3 points out of a playoff spot with our #1 goalie injured. Plus you add a player in a position we're sorely lacking.
Wake up people!

If he was 32, sure, your assertion would be correct.
If it works out we sign him, it's something that helps us now and moving forward because of how young and how good he is.
|
You're not getting what I'm saying.
This means we are going for it this year (if colorado matches) because now the worst possible case scenerio is us finishing in the bottom 3. That means we won't be trading anyone of importance. We can't go and trade Kipper and Iggy because then once again, we become a bottom feeder.
This to me, means we will be extending Iginla and the rebuild is delayed for at least another year and Jarome is most likely of the table as a rental that could garner us anything remotely decent.
This is not a good thing in my eyes.

I feel like this should have been done earlier or not at all. He's going to take some time to get into game shape and I would think his impact this year will be limited due to sitting out so long. I do like the idea of him in a Flames uniform.

Well played Feaster. The right kind of player to gamble our 1st rd pick on.
Feaster really used the CBA to make this difficult for Colorado. Colorado can't trade him for a calender year. The trade deadline is likely to be before today's date next year. The QO has to be 6.5m when this deal expires. That is a lot if he isn't signed to a long term deal prior to that. The QO comes in at the same time as Duchene and Landeskog need to be signed. Giving him the signing bonus for this year. Well made offer to ensure we have the best chance to sign a 22 year old centre who has proved he can play in the NHL.
Doesn't matter if they match or not, smart move IMO.
Colorado won't match. We'll miss the playoffs on the last night of the season and then proceed to win the draft lottery.

You are making assumptions. The Flames could still unload veterans at the deadline. This doesn't change that.

Best part to me is that IF Colorado matches, $6.5 will be the starting point for his new contract at the end of 2014. Starting point. With Stastny and Duchene already making that, it'll be interesting to see how the Avs respond.
Calgary can afford it. Love the move. I love you Feaster.

Not neccessarily. Iginla could still decide that he wants to go somewhere else that has a better chance. Any trades involving Iginla, Kiprusoff, and Bouwmeester would have to bring back some draft picks and/or young players/prospects. The Flames still have lots of opportunities to acquire draft assets.
This is a great rebuilding move that excellerates the process.

I've got it.
Feaster knows the Avs will match, thereby adding a solid player to their lineup and decreasing their chances of finishing in the bottom 5.
This is all part of Feaster's diabolical plan to get MacKinnon (or at least Nichushkin/Nurse/Barkov).
