If Jankowski was the player we were targetting all along, then we actually got a free second rounder, which is an increase in value.

I can't see Feaster making any significant changes for this year until the trade deadline. Clearly the club can be viewed as one in transition this season. This is a "hold your nose and swallow" year for the club. He is building for the future.

Your first sentence really makes me wonder about the honesty of your second. That would be a pretty damn horrible trade for the Flames.

Curious, in your opinion, how significant do you believe they will be?

Irrelevant to your original point. We could've (and likely would've) made the same move if we had a full seven picks going into the draft.
Either way, it's hard to call it a free second rounder when it comes at the expense of going off the board. You might trust your scouting staff, but NHL first rounders bust at an extremely high rate already and going after a player everyone else clearly has ranked way lower only increases that risk. It's 2013 - other teams were aware of Jankowski and clearly weren't as impressed.

It is irrelevant to my original point, but so was your comment which I was replying to. If we made no trades at all, we would have had seven picks. As it was, we had seven picks, so the original comment about how we, at one point, had less than seven for the 2012 draft is meaningless.

We were going off the board regardless, so the pick was "free" relative to what we entered the draft with whether Jankowski has a Hall of Fame career or never plays an NHL shift.
Certainly Jankowski is a riskier pick, but one would argue that turning our selection into an extra pick helps mitigate the risk.

Has it been confirmed by outside sources that Jankowski does indeed play Center?

Impossible to know, but I can see core players being shopped for future pieces.

Iginla for Bergeron would be horrible. For Boston.
Bergeron is a 27 year old Selke caliber center. Probably one of the top-5 two way forwards in the game. Iginla is a 36 year winger on the last year of his contract.
If Feaster called Boston with that offer they'd laugh in his face.

From what I saw in his game this weekend on the net, I'm pretty sure he's playing wing.

Yeah I don't know why people keep making proposals for Iginla that involve quality roster players coming back. The team looking to acquire Iginla is probably a cup contender, therefore, they will be adding to improve competitiveness not reduce or even keep it equal.
Contenders will only trade prospects and picks to the Flames for Iginla because they need their roster players for a long cup run. For the Flames, they should only be targeting prospects and picks because they already have enough veterans. They need a younger mix.

Bergeron is also one year away from unrestricted free agency. You don't give up Iginla and a first rounder for that. I'd love to have the player, but that trade is horrible for Calgary, whether or not Boston would do it.

Wonder what centers might be available, some underachieving teams with center depth out there.
Washington: Backstrom (likely untouchable)
Philly: Briere, Schenn, Couturier
Detroit: Flippula
New York: Richards
San Jose: Thornton, Pavelski
Florida: Weiss
Colorado: Statsny, O'Reilly
Issue is none of these guys are likely available in reality, especially with what the Flames have to offer without selling our future.
Statsny is the most intriguing to me. I think O'Reilly is more likely to sign in Colorado if he is promised top 6 minutes and trading Statsny provides that.
Plus Statsny is on a big contract and had underachieved, have to think Colorado would look to move that contract as a budget team now.

I think O'Reilly is done in Colorado no matter what, so Stastny won't be on the market. But the acquisition cost on O'Reilly wouldn't be light.

It is more like Iginla and a top 8 pick for Bergeron, that is a good trade for Boston.

I hadnt thought of it that way before, but you are absolutely correct
I wonder if this is by design for Feaster, to talk a big game, say we will be active next year, and if it ticks off Iginla to have 6 different centers in 18 games andd he asks to be moved, all the better (for Feaster).
I am on the other side of this. If Feaster cant deliver some NHL quality centers, he should be shown the door, and im losing patience with Hartley on Horak and Jones.

Ok, but do some insignificant changes in the meantime. Dump bust prospects for other bust prospects (like the Wahl deal) or marginal dmen/fourth liners for other teams marginal dmen/fourth liners. Agree wait until deadline for significant changes unless someone knocks your socks off. But let's have some fun along the way.

I don't think so. Bergeron is a 60 point center with outstanding two way player in the heart of his career. The Bruins need him if they want to win another cup anytime soon.
Iginla isn't worth Bergeron and an 8th doesn't realistically help Boston for at least 3-4 years. Bergeron is better then Iginla and an 8th moving forward, not even taking into account Iginka's expiring contract, because unless the pick is top 3 it has a pretty small chance of turning into a Bergeron level player IMO.

We won't get any of the above for the reasons you suggest above. Here's my 'realistic' list
Luke Adam - fallen out of favor with Buf and not invited to training camp. Buf probably wants prospect back - Granlund + Cameron/Patterson to balance out contracts?
Josh Bailey - always been intrigued by this guy but he's Isles property and Snow probably wants our first for him. Maybe when he's ufa.
Tim Connolly - can be had for cents on the dollar. Send back an expiring bad contract and save TML some money.
Mike Santorelli - Panthers eager to dump him as he's 1.6M and a bubble player. Maybe Hartley pushes the right buttons and he gets back to 20 goal form.
Steckel, Smithson also of interest and prepared to send back a prospect with no future here in return, but no picks.

I think Connolly makes a lot of sense. If you can get him for a Nemicsz type prospect. If he busts, well he helps drag this team further down the standings and a better pick and a rebuild. If he booms, you got yourself a no. 1 centre (at least scoring wise) and probably help Iggy have some more fun.
