Tanguay basically never ever shoots unless it's in a shootout

The thing with Irving is that it looks like that little bit of quicker playmaking at the NHL level vs the AHL has him thinking too much. He is always a tick behind things and where he needs to be and when that happens you see guys sitting deep in their net or over pushing to get across the net and thereby taking themselves out of position.

Did you forget that late peewee goal that cost the Flames points against the Avalanche a few week ago? That was Kipper just in case you forgot.

So when does it ever start being a little bit 'his fault'?

Previous poster hit it right on. He sits back so far in the net, regardless of where the shot is coming from. He makes it a lot harder on himself doing that.
When he legitimately loses a game for Calgary, and more than once.

His body of work this year:

Detroit game - gets 3rd period save, looks good
Columbus game - gets win, looks not-so-good
Vancouver game - 5 goals against, still looks ok. Team folded on him
Minnesota game - looked good, lost in a shootout.
Dallas game- one ugly goal, otherwise quite mediocre.

How about not consistently leaving guys wide open in prime scoring areas?

Irving hasn't been great but the Flames defense has left him out to dry on every goal.

I never thought goaltending would be our biggest issue this year, but it is for sure.

But he needs to be better for sure. Kiprusoff wasn't looking great early in the season either though. If this team had even close to the level of goaltending it has in the previous 5 seasons, I would bet that they would be a couple of games above 0.500 at least.
Maybe Troy ward saw something when he moved Irving down the depth chart.
