Because Blair Jones is one of three centers currently playing and has the second most NHL experience of those three?
Remember when people were up in arms about the suggestion of Gomez coming? Flames were very thin up the middle to begin with but this has gotten pretty crazy.
Stajan, Cervenka, Jones.

I do wonder if it's a case of Irving just needing more experience to get used to the difficulty gradient or if he is as flawed as he looks.
But he needs to be better for sure. Kiprusoff wasn't looking great early in the season either though. If this team had even close to the level of goaltending it has in the previous 5 seasons, I would bet that they would be a couple of games above 0.500 at least.

Anyone else feel that Irving's over-aggressiveness in the shootout against Minnesota, has kind of made him a wee tenative in the net tonight? Has been on the goal line all night

Within the realm of that play, it's tough to expect him to be anywhere else. I've noticed he's a little timid tonight compared to his game against the Wild, but that's why I started with "there". The game as a whole is a different matter than that singular play.
I really don't know what people expected of him there. Quick and Kiprusoff might have pulled a magic save because they're reflex goalies who seem to have puck ESP and could be fast enough to turn and make a quick move. I can't imagine most goaltenders making any good save attempt though. Perfect pass and a good shot.

Bleh. Weak shot by Cervenka. He's got to start putting some more in with all these chances.

Wiling to defend Irving to the ends of the earth eh...
So when does it ever start being a little bit 'his fault'?
Previous poster hit it right on. He sits back so far in the net, regardless of where the shot is coming from. He makes it a lot harder on himself doing that.

I urge you to go back and watch his goal saving stop in the first 5 minutes of the game that could have made this a very different looking game. Still is the best save of the game

I see that. A goaltender's willingness to charge out of net generally an indicator of their confidence. Irving seems a bit deflated after getting shot up in the shootout by NHL veterans.
This is mostly an experience thing. A 24 year old goalie isn't experienced and will take those sorts of experiences worse than a 30 year old. Plus, we're pretty spoiled by Kiprusoff being the same player pretty much every game for many years, only falling apart in this recently.

I didn't watch it but on the radio Mike Rogers said he was out of position and had to make an incredible save because of it.
Also the peewee level type goal he let in on Morrow's 2nd goal nullifies that.

I think Cervenka was too. I certainly expected Tanguay to shoot that one.

Irving has been sitting deep in the net every game so far he has played this season.
