I'm not judging, because I've seen Ferland play very little, but why do you both share these opinions? Is it from what you've seen of him playing live, the dust up in Cochrane (dumb on his part), or other bits of info. you've gathered over the years? Again, not judging, but I'd like to know what I'm missing.
The Cochrane thing doesn't even come into my mind to be honest. I am basing it what I have seen in the AHL and the few times I saw him in the WHL and I guess some of the reports (like him coming to camp out of shape). When I saw him play in the dub I thought despite his numbers he didn't make an impact in enough of his shifts. I found a decent portion of his production came from being stronger and not from being more talented or outworking the other players. In the AHL he just simply wasn't that good. He was "OK" at best. He wasn't engaged physically, he didn't seem very fast, he did little to nothing with the offensive opportunities he had. Not once did I think to myself that he was a hard worker.
With Lance Bouma everything about his game screams team player, hard worker and heart. It's evident nearly every time he is on the ice. I don't think I need to go into details here as we have all seen enough of him to know that he is the kind of guy that would lay down in front of a train if it means helping the team win.
That is why Bouma saw NHL time as a 1st year pro and Ferland sat in the press box in both the ECHL & AHL and then eventually went crawling back to the WHL with his tail between his legs. As I am sure you gather I am not impressed with Ferland forcing his way back to Junior, this screams to me that he is not the type of player that will fight to get better, but instead will look for a way for things to be easier. I very much see it as a gigantic character flaw and very much doubt he will even have the drive to do well in the AHL.

The thing is we have no toughness in our organization. Fighter is one thing but we can use more grit for sure. Begin and Jackman are decent but when the game gets rough we don't want our better players fighting.
Weisbrod said something similar to this when he stated Ferland was going back down to Sakatoon...Something along the lines of the Flames not having a forward of his ilk.
I'm disappointed he's not the AHL, but I haven't given up on him.

Jankowski collected the primary assist on Providence's only goal today and Gillies had a 37 save shutout for a 1-0 win. That's Gillies 4th shutout of the year.
