Yeah, seems to be a cursory look at best. They would need a whole crew to check every customer thoroughly.
Although they appear to be careful to try to block off cashier lines that aren't in use, I would suspect people have successfully snuck through there without paying.

Granted, I don't go to Costco very often, but I have never seen anyone given more than a passing glance and a swipe of the marker.

Yeah, but it's like fighting through a mob of zombie old people to get to it, so is it really worth it?

I'm sure there are bigger concerns. Doesn't mean that I like having to stand in line for someone to make sure that I'm not stealing something.
I never said it wasn't for theft prevention.
Costco does treat me like a thief. They force me to wait in line to show my receipt to someone (who doesn't even really review it).
It's idiotic and inefficient. If I wanted to steal something, I would probably be smart enough to keep it hidden for another 80 feet until I'm out of the store.
Anyways, it's clear that most people haven't bothered to read my original post. After I (in my bigshot fashion, puffed up my chest, screamed obscenities at the single mother asking for my receipt) rolled my cart filled with 80" TVs out the door (running over her one good foot in the process), I reviewed the terms and conditions from my membership and noticed that it does state that I have consented to standing in line like a sheep waiting for my receipt to be verified.
Don't worry, I now stand in line like the rest of you. Waiting for someone to look through my cart as they review my receipt to make sure that I haven't stolen anything. I do think it's an invasion of my privacy, but it is equally annoying that it is such a waste of time. If I managed to hide something from the cashier as I went through the till, why would I put it in the cart during the 80 foot walk to the door?
I do find myself shopping at Costco less because of it.

How? You literally just had 2 people do this, in a much more thorough manner, at the checkout.
The whole receipt check thing annoys me too, but mostly because it comes at the end of a trip to Costco, which is what I imagine hell to be like. Trying to turn it into some sort of assault on your privacy or an accusation that you're a thief is absurd. It's annoying, that's it.

Can you please collect your receipts from Costco from the past year and mail them to me?
No? why not?

I originally brought this up in a thread about something else, so first off I apologize for the thread jack. But this quote is pretty much how I feel about it. When I'm in Costco I want to leave, and when I'm leaving I want to leave as fast as possible, and an old man making chit-chat with every person in front of me annoys me. Inevitably it seems like theres an 8 cart line because someone has a cute kid or something.

Yeah, that comparison is miles away.
Dude, you consented to having your receipt verified by agreeing to the terms of the membership agreement. Yes, waiting sucks but everyone has to do it. It is called "living life as an adult."
You're starting to come off as one of those people who drives on the shoulder to go around around a traffic jam while the rest of the people wait their turn.

Not just old people. The family with 10 kids with no parents around. haha
I just pass on all that free stuff. 80% of the time their drinks are this supersweet mango drink or some diet gatorade crap they are trying to push. haha

I'm sure it's been said, but I guess being a little older, I like shopping at Best Buy and getting my electronics right away. I can't stand buying something online and having to wait for it to ship.
I want my new toy in my hand instantly. That's why I buy all my electronics at Best Buy. I would be sad to see my local Best Buy close.

No, because I haven't been to Costco in years. I'd suggest you avoid it as well.
Just curious, what information is available on a receipt that was not already made available to the clerk? Not to mention the fact that you handed over a bunch more information when you signed up. This is seriously the most non-sensical argument I have heard in a long time.

Thanks Dude.
It wasn't meant as a comparison, it highlights the reason why it is an invasion of privacy.
If you bothered to read the thread, you would see that I read the terms and conditions, and I now waste my time like a moron like you do.

Cashiers at Costco?
Why not just use the automated tellers?

Does your Costco have automated cashiers? The last time I went they didn't have them here. (NW Calgary) If so I'm jealous, as the lines at Costco are generally ridiculous, and that might help.

You're making a big issue out of nothing. The people who check as you're leaving are usually pretty friendly. I walk up with my receipt out in my hand, they take a quick look, swipe away with their sharpy, I say thanks, they say thanks. That's it.
For how busy and how insane Costco and the lines are it's amazing how fast you can get in and out of that place.

It does, they have 6 I think which are great, especially in the slower periods when there is only one or two cashiers working. I can't recall the last time I used a cashier at Costco.

If I didn't throw it away (without shedding it btw) then sure thing, just give me your address.
In fact, to save you time, I'll tell you what's on it right now. Socks, a few Blu-Rays, and atlantic salmon.
What's so private about your receipt that you are afraid to have someone else see it?

Wow, automated tellers would be handy at Costco, as would an express line for under 10 items.
