FYI, they really don't like it when you push past the sharpie line and try to leave.
I had someone step in front of my cart and tell me that he "needs to see my receipt". I told him that he wanted to see my receipt, he didn't need to see my receipt." This led to some posturing whereby he said that he would have my membership revoked if I didn't go to the back of the line. I pushed my cart around him, wished him luck and continued on my merry way.
I looked it up afterwards and the terms of the membership actually grant Costco an unconditional consent to search you. I've always found this to be extremely strange (and an incredible invasion of privacy).
It's the best reason I've ever found to avoid Costco.

hahahhaa what a ridiculous post. at the most it takes 2minutes to get out of costco. Normally it takes maybe an extra 30 seconds.
Maybe Costco isn't the place you should be shopping at.

I'm the same way. I also find that Best Buy employees are mostly useless. The only time I ever need them is if I can't find something and in those cases it's 50/50 whether the employee (once I track one down, which also isn't easy) knows where it is anyway.

This is why I wouldn't be a fan of an online-only system. I like being able to go and pick something up if I need it and I know if I can find it cheaper online they'll match it anyway.

Noone wants to take the time to man their own stores, when they can hire someone making minimum wage to do it.
On top of that you always have to hurdle the trap of commission based sales people selling you the wrong thing. I'd rather take my chances with online purchases.
We need to move away from the model of:
Producer --> wholesaler --> retailer --> customer
Instead it should be:
Producer --> customer
Warehouses where people have the ability to actually put their hands on goods could supplement the pruducer to customer model.

Who knew that Consumers Distributing was so far ahead of its time.

This to me is a lot like the Checkstop argument.
If you have nothing to hide, and did nothing wrong, what is the big deal to take 30 seconds to just let the guy do his job. It is obviously part of their pricing model to tightly control theft. Want to get rid of the cart checker? Then they will have to charge you more because of losses. Seriously, who cares? It's not like you bought a leather zipper mask and a rubber fist.

If you ask most CP members, they will probably say they love Costco.
So what is the difference?

Great customer service, great return policy, awesome warranties, good pricing, bulk buying. I could go on all day. Oh, and hotdogs and a pop for $1.50 or whatever it is.

Did it make you feel empowered to treat a low wage employee so poorly for just trying to do their job?

Actually, that place across from Costco gives you the best deal on those if you go the 3rd Tuesday of the month.

Well Consumer's Distributing is a retailer themselves. I'm talking about a system where you order directly from the producer of the goods.

It's Costco, I bought a family pack of leather zipper masks.
It is somewhat like the checkstop argument, aside from the fact that I don't think forcing me to hand over my receipt would be saved by Section 1 of the Charter. For the record, I'm opposed to checkstops for pretty much the exact same reason as I'm opposed to the receipt requirement.
I've done nothing wrong, therefore there is no reason to infringe on my privacy. Further, no other store assumes that I'm a thief.

I'm not sure how I treated him poorly. I didn't swear, or raise my voice.
If anything, I was the one treated poorly by him implying that I'm stealing from Costco.

But you weren't treated differently than any other customer. You were not discriminated against, and as you said yourself, it is in the membership terms and conditions. If you cannot understand why they do this, maybe stop shopping at Costco.

So to sum up, Best Buy and Future Shop sell one type of thing, electronics, which in storefront form is a dying industry, as everyone knows, while costco is...............friggin costco!
Or in other words, you awnsered your last question with your first sentence.
|
The point is that Costco manages to maintain a healthy profit margin while at the same time still sell many electronic items.
Oh, and they also sell a lot of stuff places like Amazon sell too. So they're dealing with the pressure from there, just like Best Buy, Future Shop and others are.
