Well, there's a shoppers drug mart and a Subway in Kensington as well as a Safeway. Also an Original Joe's which is a chain. Urban Barn is too as is Jugo Juice and Booster Juice. There may be others, I can't remember. What kind of big chain stores were you hoping for?

Whoa whoa whoa. Yuppie, maybe, but hipster? I don't think you know what that means. There is nothing hipster about Kensington. Other than maybe the Roasterie? Even that is pretty borderline.

Anybody who says Rush is a bad band does not know how to play a musical instrument and has no appreciation for the talent it takes to do so on the kind of level that band performs at.

Yeah I know there are chains there but I'm more so referring to the general attitude of most of the population (or atleast the loudest part of the population) that resides there towards such places. It just bothers me beyond belief.

Sorry I'm not up to snuff on my lingo. I do know one thing though and it pretains to these areas as well... If I hear one more person refer to themselves as a "foodie" I will literally stab them in the heart.

Which does not explain what that joint that sells exclusively honey and candles is doing still there. How does that place subsist? I marvel at it every time I see it.

PS I forgot Running Room and Wind, both have locations in Kensington, neither is "mom and pop". I guess Julio's has an Edmonton location too so I don't know if we count that, or what. I'm curious if he was just thinking there would be a Wal Mart on 10th street or what.

If you go to NYC or even the old districs of European cities do you think they have the same attitude? That everything should be mom & pop? Not at all. You see all types of conglomerates occupying the first floor of urban apartments. Only in places that didn't naturally develop into "urban" neighbourhoods do you see this type of attitude.

It's all fake. It's planned. It's a planned hipster HQ.

I mean if you really want that lifestyle thats great, but I'm of the unpopular opinion that I can't stand being surrounded by that type of Pretentious enviroment.

I don't know about the European cities you're referring to, but the majority of small stores occupying the first floor of residential buildings in NYC are indeed mom & pop type operations. There has been an increasing trend of stores like 7-11, but even their entry has been opposed by many community boards. Overall you don't see anywhere near as many "conglomerates" in NYC as you do in any other city, there's still not even a Wal-Mart.

Some of it is zoning imposing smaller storefronts than large chain stores would want, but in general you're right. I predict Kensington will actually get more and more chains as rents go up/leases end, similar to the newish Shoppers and Best Buy on 17th Ave SW.

Maybe he was just paying respect to a pioneer, but it is pretty hefty praise.

The two Ethiopian restaurants defy explanation. Always empty. How do they survive with the high rent? Are they fronts for something else?

I don't think I've ever walked down a downtown street in Europe that didn't have atleast one of the following stores: Subway, Adidas, Nike, Pizza Hut or a 7-11esque chain store from that country.

Exactly. You don't have to like Rush or Geddy's voice but saying they are the worst band ever is like saying Bach sucked at composing music.

A number of new high-rise condos are going up, with even more retail space on the ground floors.

When I win the lottery, my dream is to buy a local K'Ton landmark, and turn it into a live music venue (and record shop, guitar shop, recording studio and record label).
