There seems to (already) be a lot of handwaving going on here.

The fact is this mentally-ill person didn't kill these kids with knives, or bombs, or bombs with knives in them. He didn't kill them with a video game or a movie either.

And it may not have been an "automatic weapon" or an "assault rifle", but that's just semantics now. At this point, what's the difference? He shot and killed a bunch of people in a few minutes without even really knowing what he was doing.

He simply should not have had access to those weapons. His mom shouldn't have had them (and shouldn't have been allowed to have them) in the house that he lived in, if at all.

The horse is out of the barn, obviously, but in this situation, there's more than one horse. Can't they at least try to stop at least the new horses from getting out?

Make it harder to buy these weapons. Make it at least as hard as getting a dog license or a driver's license. They can wave the Constitution all they want, but we know these modern weapons weren't part of the deal then. Just like being forced to buy insurance on your car, which also didn't exist, wasn't part of the conversation at the time.

And of course it's complicated, and there is more than one factor at play here. But it's pretty damn clear what the most dangerous factor is.

Bombs with killer bees in them.

In a way, it hurts to mock it, because this is a serious discussion.

On the other hand, what else are you supposed to do when someone says a 30 round magazine is necessary for hunting, and then tells you they don't disagree that it should be banned?

Video games, violent movies, lack of religion in schools. It's all the same ol' claptrap that leaves most of us saying, "can we get back on topic here?"

For a lot of the gun guys on here, avoiding negative gun talk is the topic.

You read their posts, and you can just tell they're squirming as they try to continuelly shift the focus to anything but guns.

Yeah, a bunch of things..... But mostly the guns.

SInce these types of games have come out the murder rate has dropped in America but the volume/sales and violence level in the games has increased if it was part of the problem the numbers shouldnt show the opposite trend.

And there are more guns than ever...so does that mean they should make more and more of them, thereby reducing the number of homicides? I mean, if they were part of the problem, and using your logic, the numbers shouldnt show the oposite trend. Right?

That would be a ludicrous conclusion.

And im not sure why you are arguing this...the links above are kind of hard to dsipute as to the idea that violent video games have a negative effect on people. Certainly not solely nor even mostly responsible for what we have seen, but again are likely a piece of the puzzle.

Guns are the major part of this, but there are quite literally millions and millions of gun owners who have not and never will use their weapons against other people....as there are millions of those unaffected by video games but others who are.

There is nothing offensive about that. WHAT???

People find new and incredible ways for me to hate them.
Just listened to the song, and I can see how the chorus might remind people of it. That said, I don't think being actually offended by it is a overly reasonable response.

On an another note, the song doesn't seem as bad as the other Ke$ha garbage that I have come across.

I argue because there are numerous people that have studies that do not agree.

The rest of the world has less guns and more video games too so do you really want to use your example as a blame for video games?

If the gun culture in the US is to blame, as many posters here have stated, then how is it that the desensitization, however minor, that happens from repeatedly shooting people in video game, gets a free pass?

If you make guns a common thing, trivializing or glorifying them to youth, and it will have an impact. Not saying it is the sole contributing factor in ANY of these tragedies, but to ignore or dismiss the contribution it can make into solidifying gun culture, would be foolish IMHO.

When I grew up I played with toy guns all freaking day and if I pretended to shoot it most of the time it was at other kids I was with. Hours of gun play by young boys pretending to shoot at each other. In the 50's and 60's the heroes were men who shot guns and westerns were the hits of the day.
There was no finger pointing at this type of play and there was more killing when these kids grew up. The glorification of the Bonnie and Clyde's and Capone's are no different today either.
But todays kids play violent video games and the killing has dropped.

So what is different?

It is incredibly disingenuous for people to say that violent media doesn't contribute in some way to these mass killings. I believe the anti-gun crowd, of which I belong, immediately loses credibility when they claim otherwise. The main argument of this group being "oh, violence in different forms of media simply desensitizes us, it doesn't actually promote violence"...

Until everything is put on the table and considered, with the exception of these idiotic notions of the religious right, nothing will be solved imo.

My own thought is that many things contribute to these people carrying out acts of hate, but the same tools are used over and over again to carry them out- therefore, it is easier to control the tools and weapons than it is the endless number of things that contribute to a violent nature.

I am always surpirsed that a group (the NRA) that has a membership of 0.01% of the US population is so strong.

Piers Morgan is slowly becoming an American hero. Thank god someone is willing on national tv to call these gun nuts on their bizarre bs.

The violent video game thing is such a red herring. If there was any credibility to that argument you should be having 1/10 the mass shootings in Canada that you have in the US, and you should be having 1/10 the gun murders, and the numbers should be the same per capita. It is not like Canadian kids play less violent video games or watch less violent tv shos and movies.

You almost have a completed controlled experiment, USA v. Canada. Both countries watch pretty much the same tv, both countries watch pretty much the same movies, both countries play the same violent video games. Both countries have similar rates of mental illness. Literally every variable is controlled with the exception of guns. Guns and access to them is pretty much the only difference between the two countries.

One country has six times the number of gun murders that the other country has.

The guy he was arguing against had such weak arguments, and all Morgan can do is call him an incredibly stupid man? They both looked like morons in that video. Bickering children.
