If they really expect to resist a modern military then yes I do.

Sad but interesting timing. Guns versus no guns? People are going to point to this as a counterpoint to gun advocates saying crazy people are going to kill the same number/scale regardless of access to guns.

http://www.cnn.com/2012/12/14/world/...html?hpt=hp_t3

Twenty-two primary school children were wounded in a knife attack Friday in central China, authorities said.

The attack took place at the entrance to the Chenpeng Village Primary School in Henan province, according to the public information department of Guangshan county, the area where the school is located. An adult was also wounded, it said.

Several of the children are in critical condition, the state-run website Chinanews.com said, citing local authorities.

Banning guns OR gun control alone isn't the total solution, so does anyone have any other ideas?

Does that create a black market? Banning guns DOES punish the 95% who for some reason need guns but Don't use them for these purposes - so the criminals who use guns for craziness will still have guns - and criminals aren't usually the ones responsible for these types of shootings - it's the mentally ill...

so maybe some universal healthcare is a better start.

Kind of in the same vein where I'm about to go. First, ban certain types of guns. There is no need for anyone to own a .50 calibre rifle, AR-15 or Sig Sauer P226 tactical pistol. Ban certain pistol ammunition(9mm, 10 mm, .40 , .45 , .50calibre)and non- hunting calibre ammunition (.223 or 5.56, 7.62, .50 calibre). Beef up gun crime legislation. Something clearly needs to be done and unfortunately the majority must have their priveledge curbed in order to reduce the chances of something like this happening again.

I think anything that lowers the chance of this happening, and saves a few lives here and there, is a great start. You will never get rid of these incidents completely, even we have our odd incident up here. But Rome wasn't built in a day, but you have to start laying the foundations, before you can build a Coliseum.

I'm kind of sick of the mental illness angle. Seems like these guys have the sense to go into places where they know they will face little resistance and the awareness that they need to do their action in a public place for maximum exposure.

That's where the state falls down. Case in point is the downtown east side of Vancouver. The government kicked the mentally ill out of local psychiatric institutions, closed them then let them fend for themselves. Most mental health problems can be treated effectively, however this costs money and you need healthcare professionals to make it work.

I'd probably do some google searches, post an add on craigslist, and get arrested.

Gang members and drug dealers probably have connections that would give them access to the existing guns even if gun sales were banned, but I doubt that a lot of these mass shooters would be able to.
This same argument can be made not for banning guns but for requiring tougher background checks to get a gun. In the case of the Tucson shooting, if ol' JLL had been turned down to buy a gun due to his belief in government mind control through grammar, its very doubtful to me that he could have gone down to his neighborhood gang and asked to purchase some illegal guns. That is common sense gun control. But in this case, with the guns purchased by the mom (for her under-21 son? ) it wouldn't have worked.

Agree. Hatred and mental illness is a dangerous combination. And there seems to be a lot of hatred brewing, which is not good at all.

It's a huge start and a huge part of the solution. A war on guns would be a lot easier then I war on drugs.

The mindset of the typical American needs to change, that's the real battle.

What I meant was that I think the mental illness factor is exaggerated. I mean these guys all have been sane enough to know they have to go into a place that is an easy target. I think by assuming that all these guys must have had some mental illness lets them off the hook to a certain extent. Some people are just evil.

Not to pick on you pylon, but if the suspect obtained the guns after murdering his mother, I would certainly argue with you on this point.

That would be saying that I could stab a cop, take his gun and it was a "legally obtained" firearm.

What's hard to to fix for me in the US is the gang issue. We have a huge gang issue here and we have an issue were parents have a xbox raise their kids and they allow them to play super violent games from the beginning that devalues life.

if it were to stop all the mass shootings and gun deaths I would support the gun ban. This idiot woke up killed his mom, stole her weapons, then went on a killing spree.

All my weapons are completely locked up right now and only come out if I go hunting, or to the range, or a competition.

Honestly though, we need to think about all these innocent kids and families that lost their loved ones due to some idiot who ruined hundreds of lives instead of politicizing it.

We can do both.

We can think about all the people who lost their lives today and talk about the gun issue.
