I never feel so out of place as when I'm in the states. Other countries, even some that speak other languages, often feel more like home, more comfortable to me.

Maybe I just notice the differences there more because of the similarities, as opposed to other countries where I am expecting big difference, but still...

Gun control is the biggest part of any solution. The trouble is there are over 200 Million guns in the US, so restricting new purchases is simply not going to work. Gun ownership is so ingrained, I don't know what the solution is

I feel far more at ease in Australia and New Zealand, which I have travelled to numerous times. Heck, even Asian countries that don't have the same standard of living, I feel far more safe and comfortable.

When I get to the US, I feel like I have to watch my back 24/7. But that's just me.

I feel terrible for this guy and I think he should sue the media (a lot of different news organizations seem to be showing his photo and linking his Facebook account).

Saw a report that the other person that was arrested was Lanza's brother. Anyone else see that?

Fox news has a mother call in with her grade 3 daughter who was at the school and they are interviewing the girl.

Asking what happened, have you done drills for this?

I can't believe the mother thought that was a good idea.

I think it really depends on where you are. I love living in NYC, but it's certainly different than a lot of the country.

I have to admit though, that even though I see very few differences between the people in the two countries as a whole, things like this do make me pause to think about whether I want to stay here when i have a family. Used to be a no brainer that I would stay, now not so much.

I loved living in Chicago, Arizona, Ohio and especially California. As the time to have a family drew nearer, it was time to go back to Canada. I can't put my finger on any one reason, but it was a host of reasons (beyond just wanting to raise kids where I was raised).

Will be interesting to see how this plays out. Obama definitely seems like he wants to take on the wacky right on this. How much he can, or will decide to do will be seen.

It will be interesting in general to see how he plays the last four years of his presidency.

I have to think it's probably me being somewhat paranoid as well, given how much alarmist American media we get here and rarely is there a feel-good story from the US coming on the 6 o'clock news here in Calgary. So I have drawn a few conclusions which is unfortunate.

However, by the same token, my personal safety does feel threatened most every time I go to the States. In the last 10 years, the only place that I felt generally comfortable was in New York City, where law enforcement is everywhere and all the gangsters and scrubs I saw there in the 90's has since been replaced with hipsters and business people. Conversely, every time I go to San Francisco, the downtown district feels as schizo as ever, and I don't dare even go down to Union Square on my own past 10 PM. This is quite tragic.

I've found that the urban/rural divide is much more prevalent in the US. Like you say, places like New York (or San Francisco or Portland, etc.) seem very similar to Canada, but that doesn't apply to a lot of the country. I've been to nearly every state and major city in the US and there are huge swaths of the country that feel completely alien.

And even in the cities I've noticed big differences in attitudes, especially when the conversation ventures into what are some of the distinguishing features between Canada and the US (health care, gun control, etc.).

He can't run again, IIRC, so maybe he is the guy to take a run at gun control.

An executive order banning the sale and possession of assault weapons and ammunition by regular citizens?
