Having the rotation set up
Johnson
Dickey
Morrow
Buerhle
Romero
would have a fireballer, followed by a knuckleballer, followed by a fireballer, followed by a mid 80's pitcher, followed by Romero.
It would be really hard for teams to adjust to the speed differences from each of the guys and would make it just that much more difficult. Add in the great pen full of high K/9 guys and it would be pretty much as good of a staff as one could realistically get and we wouldn't have to give up a ton due to Dickey's age (JPA + Carreno + Jenkins or Sierra might be enough)
|
Yeah I don't see that at all. JP is a barely average catcher, Carreno is going to be lucky to ever fill out a #5 spot on a weak team, Jenkins has little value now and Sierra is not a major league talent IMO. Mets are going to be selling incredibly high on a CY Young award winner. I realize you didn't use those names as a trade set in stone, more hypothetical then anything but it's going to take a lot to get Dickey and I think you could find a much more proven commodity if you're willing to overpay for another starting pitcher. Although it would be neat the way the rotation would be such a wide mix in variety of style.

I'm all for this contract. Cheap and doesn't come at a bad term. The only "concern" is he goofs off with other fellow partiers on the team and they don't show up game time. I certainly hope not, but all of a sudden the team has more swagger. As long as their ego's don't get the best of them, it should be a great team to watch. Hopefully positive leaders emerge though.

awesome!
suck it Wilner "the Jays can't afford to sign anymore players".
What's exciting is we really don't know what the final payroll will be. No clue.
What if Rogers decides to outspend the Yankees!?

Dickey's on a 1 year contract. That's the only reason why the deal might not be as awesome in return to the Mets. I did include several names that Riccardi drafted/signed due to him being the director of player personnel for the Mets.
I think you can get away with JPA + maybe one or two of the 10-15 players in our system. Say like Sean Nolin or some such (Carreno). Either way, the Jays should go all out for another quality guy.

Jays now have four switch hitters which is huge for how bad they've been against LHP.
As for payroll, I don't think we see any other big contracts and no point in spending just to keep spending. This team is not all in on 2012-2013. AA is still going to value the assets he's worked so hard to build in this organization.

That Melky signing is great, nothing linking PED to where he was excelling last year
Last two seasons combined his slash line is 322/360/489
only worry is the .380 BABIP but with the way he covers the plate, and the types of hits (lots of line drives)
and where before I was trying to not get excited, but this
SS Reyes
LF Cabrera
RF Bautista
DH Encarnacion
3B Lawrie
1B Lind
C Arencibia
CF Rasmus
2B Izturis/Bonifacio
is arguably as good a 1-9 as anyone in the league

Be interesting to see how a Knuckle Baller would do pitching in a dome stadium, not sure of any legit split stats that would show us that. Thanks for pointing out the 1 year contract, I still think AA goes for someone with more years, especially with Johnson only at 1, but no way anything in this offseason could have been predicted so far

Another thing the Jays 2013 team will have over every other team under the AA era, is an actual bench. Omar Vizquel played 60 or so freaking games last season. The Jays bench fill out really nice right now.
Now I hope the Jays can platoon Lind at 1st and Darren Oliver coming back would be great news.

Plus Cabrera is also a switch hitter. We could theoretically have 3-4 switch hitters in the lineup every night. I'm not sure I've ever seen that before..anywhere

yep, the bench is huge
I think the WAR added so far based on last year is 16-18 (depending on how you view Melky)
but considering Vizquel was a negative, along with a few other players, a good bench could add a couple more as well

In regards to the bench, I think Anthony Gose should be a huge pinch runner.

Paper work finally handed to the league re: Florida/TOR deal which means nobody failed a physical, which is good news when you consider 12 players and it being the offseason. Should be finalized on Monday

So does it make sense to get Manny Acta now since we have so many Dominican players?

This is so true. The novelty of Vizquel in a Jays uniform wore off at about the third game he started.
Their bench is deep. Their starting line up is awesome, I still see Lind and Arencibia hitting 7 and 8th as a bit of a black hole though.

The Melkey signing is awesome. He was the NL MVP last year before he got suspended and his contract would have been 5 years 14 million AT Least had he finished out the season. This contract is incredibly team friendly, gives the Jays an incredible lineup they can put together and they didn't give up an asset. Amazing
|
Ironic that they shipped him to the brewers then. That was thoughtless of them.

That would be the cherry on top of an incredible week. It sure just became a coveted job that is for sure.

I'd imagine Rogers won't pass up the chance to really glamorize this, likely a press conference introducing all the new players, which will lead to one on one interviews and another week of press for the Jays and then the new manager coming on board will do the same. Throwing out all baseball related reasons these moves are great for the Jays, from a PR and Marketing perspective it's a giant homerun, at a time when the product was at quite a low point. Factor in the NHL lockout and the more national popularity the Jays have been growing, I'm not sure there will be a more anticipated season in Blue Jays history then 2013-2014

It's funny how much buzz the Jays have gotten over this here in Toronto. There is no sport bigger, and it's just the start of the off-season. Even at my workplace, as a group we're planning at least 40+ people to go to the home opener, and that's just the start of the season. The last time I've seen a buzz like this in any sport in Toronto was probably when Vince Carter did his all-star weekend dunks. This is the offseason, so it is pretty unprecedented.
