What was up with the zombies laying on the ground in the prison who looked like they were 1/2 eaten?
I was fully expecting Rick and company to round a corner and run into a pack of zombie dogs or zombie wolves or something.

If I am thinking of the same ones you are the bodies looked burned. If not then I don't know which ones you were talking about, there were a lot of bodies laying around this episode.

This is in addition to the zombie's cerebellum still being relatively in tact, which, without sustience, would have broken down long ago and made their writhing corpses unable to walk or function.
I believe there was a brief moment when they alluded to this in yesterday's premiere. When Rick takes off the helmet of the zombie cop, he was pretty much just wasted flesh and a skull. I think the intent was to show that the zombies are deteriorating, even if it is a slow process.
At some point the story would have to become less about zombies, and more about humans fighting over waning resources. The comic does a good job of showing intra-human social conflicts as the plague drags on.

You might be over thinking a TV show about Zombies......
I enjoyed it the show. I like new badass Carl. Let's hope he taps the blond chick

I thought it was portraying that someone else had been cleaning out walkers at an earlier point in time.

The inmates that are in the kitchen? Maybe they fought their way there?

As far as I read in the comics (only up to Volume 4), she said they keep other zombies away. And even though she cut off their jaws, she didn't know why they stopped attacking her.

The guards locked the inmates in the cafeteria when things started to get really bad, hence the handcuffs on the outside of the door. The inmates wouldn't have been able to lock themselves in that way.
More than likely is that some of the guards killed some zombies, and possibly other people tried to clear out the prison and died there. They did mention that some of the zombies were in civilian clothes, but that could either mean they died there trying to clear the place out like Rick's group, or they were already zombies when they got to the prison.

That football player was Tyrese, but yeah I could see T-Dog taking over his spot.

When the group was wandering around in the dark, it showed a bunch of dead zombies on the ground and it looked like some of them had their exposed flesh chewed off. Heads, legs, arms, etc.
Maybe it's just me!

Based on last nights show, it appears that these armless-jawless zombies work quite well as pack horses.

depends, I reckon there are more than one entrance. It is possible they "secured" all but the one entrance they entered. That being said I reckon you are correct.

Were they dead zombies; or just dead people? It makes sense to me that if there were a bunch of zombies who killed a person, they would eat most of the flesh off the person.
Just like the zombie they found who had hung humself. In the time between when he died and when he turned into a zombie; the other zombies had eaten the bottoms of his legs off.

I reckon he will use a broadbrush of hate. T-dawg dropped the keys, T-dawg, could have chucked him the saw.

One thing is for sure:
If I'd spent the last 8 months on the run in the wilderness constantly on the lookout for the undead who I had witnessed brutalize countless members of my group, I certainly would not 'poke' a zombie in the chest to see if he was alive or not.
I think i'd probably make it a habit to smash any unsmashed skull I saw that wasn't talking to me.
It's like poking a snake to see if it's alive.

That prison was creepy. No lights, musky and dark, dead and decaying bodies everywhere, what looked like dead ends everywhere. You'd think that if that actually happened, you wouldn't take another step into that abyss of decay and rot; you leave the prison and find something less death-filled.
