A regular windshield isn't strong enough to stop it?
I had this happen to me on deerfoot, I was S/B and the other vehicle was N/B. It was crazy, I could see the rock coming, it actually tracked it into my windshield, and it put a inch diameter hole in my windshield, the inside of the car was covered in smashed glass and the inside of my pants were covered in feces. I was lucky and could drive home, but when I took it in to get replaced, I was told that usually, they let loose if hit with that much force.
Sad Sad story for this family.

This stuff happens all the time. 50,000 fatalities a year on the highway, but people just sort of ignore the numbers. Debris on the road is a disaster, and construction areas often result in wood, rocks, equipment getting tracked out there. If a semi hits it, it's basically a rocket.

There are a lot of large trucks on the roads in the city and highways that aren't roadworthy, properly equipped, not properly cleaned, and loads not properly covered. The city periodically has checkstops for them were they nab a lot of trucks but they don't do it nearly enough.
I was once driving a company truck and had the window down, came across an area that they were paving that has loose chips on the road. I didnt think anything of it and a semi passed me in the left lane, spitting rocks up at me.
Front window was chipped a few times but the back window behind me was shattered out instantly.

WRGMG..... stupid dumba$$ semi truck drivers who are transporting a front tire rim on the back of a flat deck and don't bother to secure the load!
we were heading back to kelowna this morning after an awesome trip to calgary (minus a few folks who don't know how to 4-way stop! ) and just after (west of) rogers pass we're coming down a hill, over a bridge and this freaking tire rim shoots off the back of a flatbed being hauled by a semi. i did everything i could but just couldn't avoid it - i was going right around 90 km/h and i'm assuming the semi (and the rim) were also going about 90.
it took out 2 tires, 2 rims, skid plate, gas tank, the plastic piece that's under my bumper and who knows what else - i'm just glad my wife and i are both fine.
the insane skid i went into after the rim hit me... at one point we were going sideways down the highway, passenger side first. the tow truck driver couldn't believe that the truck didn't flip and roll!
the rim that flew off the back of the semi's flatbed....
and a further WRGMG.... everyone stopped except the dickhead semi driver - nice!

HUGE gear grinder.... i believe mud flaps are mandatory as well but rarely enforced. If more than (insert amount) say 8 inches of your tire is exposed to a driver behind you should have to have mudflaps.
I've done some police ride alongside and we wrote a couple tickets for that.
That's pretty scary and pretty sad to hear. That is the reason why I hated following or driving beside the semis. One time I was driving Northbound Deerfoot Trail to 16th Avenue. It was hot so i have my windows wide open. Suddenly, this semi drove past me and i felt a small rock almost hitting me in the face. Even a tiny rock will do damage on a person especially when the truck is driving so fast. I am just thankful I didn't get hit especially on my eyes.
I am not sure what could have been done but i guess the best thing to do is just avoid those big trucks on the highway.
