Was the windshield cracked or compromise? That is crazy.

A Calgary woman was killed in front of her family while on vacation in British Columbia when a rock from a semi smashed through the family vehicle’s windshield.
RCMP say the tragic incident happened on Highway 93/95 at Canal Flats, which is south of Fairmont Hot Springs.

I used to operate a truck with duallys and I got told that if I leave site on to city streets, I had to check my duallys for rocks. If I did not, there'd be hell to pay.
I think it's common knowledge for people that operate vehicles with duallys. So my point here is that the driver of the semi should have some responsibility here.

yikes.......driver could have picked the rock up while driving down the hiway and not have even known it was lodged between his wheels.

30cm x 13cm? Wow. That is massive.

Thrown from the wheels of a truck going at highway speeds, I'd think the rock would go through a windshield no problem.

A large rock being thrown by a semi at highway speeds could go through a windsheild no problem.

Kind of on topic, these new windshields seem weaker and more prone to chips / spider webbing etc...

It is this that makes them withstand more of an impact. A Windshield is designed to push pressure across the whole thing, so small holes are harder to make. This design in turn, makes cracks and chips spread much easier.

That's really sad. Whenever I'm driving on the highway with my windows down, I always put them up when passing semi's. A few years back in the winter I was passing a semi on Deerfoot when what I can only assume was a rock kicked out of his tire when I was right beside him. It hit my passanger side window - leaving a huge chip and scaring the crap out of me. If the window had been down it would've definitely caused injury.

It's crazy that a rock this size could've been kicked up by a semi enough to be put through someone's windshield. What's even crazier is that her husband & kids were in the car. So sad.

About a year or two ago my cousin's wife escaped certain death by a fraction of a second. They were travelling down the highway near Fernie and a falling rock hit the hood of the truck, causing extensive damage.

Wouldn't mud flaps reduce the risk of this greatly?

HUGE gear grinder.... i believe mud flaps are mandatory as well but rarely enforced. If more than (insert amount) say 8 inches of your tire is exposed to a driver behind you should have to have mudflaps.

Anything bigger than a sedan should be forced to come with mudflaps that cover 90% of the exposed tire.

Sure they might wear out quick but your stupid $20 mudflaps are a lot cheaper to replace then my $500 windshield.

Victim was northbound, truck was southbound. Not much could have been done to prevent this, however as mentioned the duallies should have been checked before rolling onto the highway.

Truckers need to pass a safety inspection every year and mud flaps are mandatory so I don't think you can say it is rarely enforced. Still, even with mud flaps rocks can still fly out from under and hit vehicles.

Jesus, i had to scan that story to make sure it was no one i knew, my brother and sister-in-law were camping in Fairmont on the weekend with their kids. couldn't imagine seeing your wife/mother die right in front of you by an "act of god"
