That piece from Gizmodo does read much more like a fan gushing rather than a really critical review of the phone. It's hard to take it too seriously and the author gives the impression of having much more forgiving standards for the iPhone than for other devices and that he would have found the good it in no matter what.

What I find funny is that on the last page there are people complaining that Apple didn't do anything to change up the OS, then complaining about the one thing that they did change. Personally I think I will get more use out of the turn by turn directions than the Google Maps. Maybe they made it better for iOS 5 (I just had 4)- but I have found the new map application is a better in car GPS; especially from the standpoint of not having to tell the phone when you have executed a turn.

**Edit- FWIW I did also install a shortcut to Google maps onto Page 1 of my phone's desktop. I still prefer the Google layout.

Going back to my earlier question about cables. DX.com has them; but they want $15. That price was too much for what could be a knock off. I hunted around town today, and found them at Best Buy in Malborough mall. $22 which is the standard price; so now at least I have 2 cables kicking around.

Apple store in Chinook Centre has a pile of the new cables for $21. I picked up one for the office and one for the truck.

I've had the iPhone 3g, 3gs and 4. I also own two ipads. The UI is my chief complaint on the iPhone 5/iOS6 as - in my opinion - it hasn't changed much over the past half decade. I clearly have a history of liking the products and I think that gives me a seat at the table when we are talking about the latest model.

Your only complaint about the UI is that it hasn't changed. Except it was good enough for you to buy 3 iPhones and 2 iPads.

I would like to see some more options with iOS as I think some improvements could be made with the folder system. I think the folders themselves are great for grouping similar apps, but I wouldn't mind being able to customize the look of the folder a bit.

I think iOS could be more customizable without losing the "closed system" they've created. With proper guidelines for designers/developers it could work well.

Something like this would be a cool option for icon design, but it doesn't solve the folder look.

Yeah it was good enough for me before, but I wasn't about to buy a phone again that was virtually the same as the other three phones I've had. It would be nice if they modernized it, gave people some options for customizing the look of the phone, and most importantly added something like widgets. They will some day as it is objectively superior to have the option to use them versus no option... I just wish they had done this for ios6.

The UI was good enough for 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, but I chose not to upgrade in 2011 because the 4s was no different than the 4. I was waiting for the 5 to upgrade but the fact that they stuck with what I view as an outdated UI led me to go with a more modern phone.

It's not the design of the icons that is the problem. It's the utter lack of conveyance of information on the home screen that is the problem - round or circular icons, folders or no folders, the iOS springboard is as static as Windows 3.1 Program Manager was:

Just piles and piles of icons, with zero interactivity or real-time information. This is the primary interface to a data management appliance, and yet it shows no information AT ALL; it's not really acceptable. Especially on the iPad, which has more screen real-estate, better battery life, and better connectivity than my laptop.

I agree. I think Windows Phone 8 does the best job of balancing clean design with real-time information coming from the apps.

There still needs to be a folder system for organization apps though. I have 100+ apps on my phone (don't know why really) and need to be able to organize them in a way that I'm not scrolling through lists or needing to perform a search.

I agree - the Windows phones have a terrific interface for a mobile device.

I agree to agree with the Windows Phone UI. I played around with one a few weeks ago and I have to admit it is a damn good phone.

I think it's not as major a concern on the iPhone, but the iPad is glaringly obvious that there's a huge waste of screen real estate. I don't own an iPad, but every time I use one I have trouble getting over how bad the grid of icons looks on that huge screen.

Agreed. Right now I have stupid stuff like "Games 1" "Games 2" "Games 3" which is just silly. It prevents me from having to swipe 6 or 7 times to get around my phone, but it's not a much better option than leaving them all "loose" on my phone.

I think it's more a by-product of pageviews. Look at any article on Gizmodo and compare it to an Apple article. A non-Apple article will get say 5000 pageviews. An Apple related one will get 20,000+ pageviews. There was an Apple article on there the other day that got over 200,000 pageviews. Couple this with (and I'm not 100% certain but I remember reading this somewhere) the fact that they get bonuses based on pageviews and that's why there are several Apple related articles a day. My theory, anyway. I'm sure it's also because they all personally would love to have sexual relations with every Apple product ever made, despite the fact they're banned from Apple events.

Just got my iPhone 5. Criticisms aside, this is a great phone and most people who buy one will be satisfied with their purchase. If you have a 4 and are on the fence, I say go for it!

Only downside is I can't seem to ever access LTE inside, even though I live/work downtown.

I know with Bell we had to get their tech support to change our plans to allow for LTE. The other thing you may need to do is go into Settings---> Carrier---> and then turn Automatic off. Then wait the 2 minutes it takes to load, and select your carrier manually. After a day you should be able to go back to automatic.

I have absolutely no feel for historical bias on various tech websites. What are other ones to watch out for?

loopinsight.com is a little heavy on the Apple side.

Oh who am I kidding, I only read it to see what the fanboy culture is talking about these days. It's so overboard as to be amusing.
