Performance, sometimes quality, the lack of availability on some videos are just a few of the reasons.

My contract just expired so I've been carefully been deliberating which phone to get next. Been using the iPhone 3GS for the last 3 years. Amazing phone, its incredible that I can still install iOS 6 and continue using it if I want to. I have nothing but good things to say about the Iphone experience I've had.
BUT...I went into the store and look at iphone 5...and despite being more advanced, modern and nicely designed...it felt primarily like the same experience I've been getting on my 3GS.
I placed an order for a Galaxy S3 yesterday, just to switch it up. Who knows if I'll like it as much, but after a while you just get bored of the same old, even if it is really good.

One of the things I like most about iOS6 is when you update or purchase an app it stays in App Store. I always hated how it would go out to the home and show you the app downloading.

it's not that incredible considering iOS6 isn't the same install across all the phones though. Siri being the most notable.

I know that, but many of the features are still useful on the 3GS and it runs pretty well. All I'm saying is I'm impressed that the 3GS has lasted me so long and continues to get some support. No doubt the Iphone 5 and other iterations have some more advanced features.

i recommend you visit the Android thread for app suggestions or other ways to customize your phone. i was ready to post a good list of things you should check out here, but as this is a dedicated iPhone thread it's probably better if i don't

I was in the same boat as you...you'll love the Galaxy S3. All Apple had to do was give some UI options and I would have stayed, but they are sticking with a four year old experience. I guess there are millions of people that won't even look at other options so sticking with what sells is a good business move. Maybe if enough people like us jump ship Apple will start bringing the UI into modern times.
I bought my S3 before we found out about Apple dropping the ball on their maps, but that would have been a deal breaker for me, anyway. I use maps daily in my job and can't be without a reliable map. The interface and maps on the S3 is amazing.

It's the first version of a product. And it's not like Google maps never sent anyone into the middle of a field (Or still doesn't). It'll get better. If you need it for work so be it, but the fact that a first-run product isn't perfect isn't 'dropping the ball'. It means it's the first version of a product.

It's a first version yes- but they replaced a very mature app that was really good in the process, with an app that doesn't have to same accuracy even with the additional features.
I think they dropped the ball-despite me actually liking the new maps.

considering the CEO of Apple himself apologized for how terrible the maps application is, then yes i would say that Apple dropped the ball on that one

Why would I care what version it is when I'm on my way to an important meeting and it can't find the right address? They replaced something that worked well with something that doesn't - that's the issue from a user's perspective. I have no doubt that it'll get better but we are talking about the present, not the future.

ConsumerReports: There has been much online grumbling about the iPhone app focused on weird 3D images, misplaced points of interest, and an absence of a Google-type "street view." As shown on our previous post, we certainly have found instances of melting images in 3D mode, but more often than not, we found rather intriguing 3D representations that bring a map to life. The reality is, this is a novelty feature, not a component of navigation.
Apple uses maps from TomTom, a leading navigation company. We suspect many criticisms pointing to the map quality are misguided, as we have found TomTom to provide quality maps and guidance across multiple platforms. Instead, the fault may be Apple's software applied to the TomTom data.
Either way, in our experience thus far, this is a minor concern.

Gizmodo Review:
http://gizmodo.com/5946599/a-week-wi...=recirculation
If the public is at all underwhelmed by the iPhone 5's arrival, it's expressed by the threadbare refrain, It doesn't look different enough, as if the New iPhone should have been hexagonal, a foot wide, or printed on the front of a graham cracker. At first blush it's an elongated iPhone 4S. But that first blush can go to hell. After just a day or two with the iPhone 5, actually using it instead of staring at pictures on the Internet, I could appreciate it for what it is: an aluminum jewel.
And then there's Maps. We need to have this talk. Apple Maps is nowhere near as good as Google Maps.
Odds are, it's fine.
There are problems aplenty, sure. Search results are off, sometimes. This needs to be fixed. The absence of integrated public transit directions is infuriating and unforgivable. This needs to be fixed.
But all of these were exceptions. Flareups. Errors. None of which prevented the iPhone 5 from being livable and usable every day I've carried it.

You know what? This is the iPhone 5 thread, not the iPhone 5 circle jerk thread. You are allowed to have an opinion on the phone whether you love it or are critical of it here.

you're encroaching on troll territory. We know how this song and dance goes... you say something inflammatory, somebody takes the bait and suddenly we are talking about ROM's, rooting, Steve Jobs being a psycho and sheep. It's a tired argument and one some of us would prefer not to have again. It would be awesome if we could keep the pissing matches to a minimum in this thread.
