I always find this debate kind of moot. They each essentially have their own benefits and drawbacks. iPhones are stable and easy to use, but tough to customize, and it's even tougher to tinker with its internal workings. Androids can be finicky, but they can be customized to your hearts content. It's basically the same as the age-old PC vs. Mac battle. Why people bother debating over it is beyond me.
- slightly higher build quality, feels more expensive, retina screen
- integrates seamlessly into the Apple ecosystem, Apple TV, Airport express, iCloud syncing, iTunes match, Airplay
- easy to use doesn't require a lot of tinkering
- access to massive app store and iTunes library
- comprehensive updates from Apple directly to device
things going for Android/flagship S3:
- open source, highly customizable interface
- S3 seems more durable, less prone to damage
- ability to move files on and off very easily
- google turn by turn
- syncing across all google apps
I think this is a good starting point, people can add or subtract as these see fit.

There is more Apps on Apple but there is also 5000 fart apps on the AppStore that don't exist on the play store. Apple Apps are more polished, this is 100% true. I have both an S3 and Iphone 4s, Apple apps are better. Sorry Fandroids, its true.
Android widgets, these are so useful its not even funny. Apple Fanboys say they are useless but jailbroken Fanboys all use widgets...hmmmmm. The home screens on Android make Apples homescreens look like a Fiero at Lambo dealership.
Battery Life, yeah my S3 makes it two days with the same use my Iphone 4s gets and craps out around 8 hours. If there was a replaceable battery I would carry 2, this is a huge disadvantage for someone who uses their phone a lot. Apple should wake up here and they would corner more of the market.
Screen.....ooooooooohohohohoh Retina.........HD screens on a 3.5" device? Useless. 4" device.....now we are getting somewhere. Is the screen on the S3 nice? Is Matt Cooke a ######bag? Same answer to both questions.
Androids Hardware is more advanced, plain and simple. They struggle behind in the App and OS area because they make an OS that has to span 100+ different phone models.
The iPhone is easy to use and uses high quality materials, yep this is true i see 3 years olds who have no issues using an iphone......The iPhone feels sturdy and well built, just don't drop it.
You've basically created a crack den of internet activity. I will know this thread is here, but I wouldn't even enter with a hazmat suit. Enjoy the "debate".

For the most part they're fairly similar, but here are a few differences that stick out to me.
iOS functions better within it's own world and it's something Android will probably never match for obvious reasons. Streaming music to a stereo is completely seamless with iOS (assuming you have an Airport Express or Apple TV) while it's a chore with Android unless you use an intermediate device (Xbox) or have a DLNA capable receiver, and even then it's not as polished.
I also find Android to be kind of ugly. It has to be designed to handle scaling between various size displays which prevents as crisp of a look, and Google also isn't really known for their great UI design aesthetics.
On the other hand, I find Android to be better in terms of UI structure. I like how easy it can be to change often changed settings (WiFi for instance) and I also like the overall layout. Some widgets are handy but I think most of them are ugly. It also obviously wins on customizability which can be a huge deal depending on how you want to use your device.

so this thread was suggested because the Apple thread (probably the Android thread too) was getting derailed with anti-fanboy slams and the like. Now we have this forum for that and all we get is polite, well-reasoned comparisons??

It's cause the only people posting here are expecting an argument. The people in the other thread just want to talk about their excitement?
