How about using low risk inmates to do some outdoor labour? We are already paying them to be locked up so time for them to pay back to the society.

It would work fine for a special event but not on an on-going basis.

Off-site prison labor isn't cheap and the issue is there is no budget left in the parks/rec department.

The cost of transporting work crew from the detention centre and guarding them (extra guard shifts don't come cheap) can be far more than the wages of the Parks Rec crew they replace.

(Even if they are low-risk, do we want to give them power tools such as a leaf blower, a weed whipper or a riding leaf raker?)

You compare bending over to pick up a piece of trash and going into a burning structure on equal footing because you're dumb.

That's not really your business. So which current poster's second account is this? To be quite honest I think I know.

How do you know that? It doesn't necessarily surprise me, I'm just curious because I've thought about proposing a few more of these for my neighborhood.

He's a hack because all he does is drum up controversies about non-issues. A "proper" journalist would have at least tried to balance out a little bit of the spin by including the small but important detail that favourable weather allowed the work to be completed earlier than usual. Instead, we got an article that suggests that the city is mercilessly sending seasonal workers to the soup lines and to expect our parks to become wastelands of rotting leaves and garbage because of it.

If the city has gone a penny over the budget, perhaps by paying the workers anyway when the work was already completed, Platt and the Sun would have been all over the city for overspending.

The Sun's receipe is this: take a relatively small issue, pick a side, include a generous portion of hyperbole, a pinch of fact, and a few tasty quotes. Then watch their "sophisticated" readership eat it all up.

Meh, if it wasn't for litter we wouldn't have had the plastic bag in American Beauty.

Clean up any one else's mess in a city tax payer funded park - no thanks.

Clean up my own mess - no thanks, CAUSE WHY WOULD I LITTER IN A FKN PARK!

What kind of a lazy self righteous pig of a human being doesnt carry his or her own trash out with them. What is there to litter in a fkn park? A choc bar wrapper, a bag of chips, a bottle of pop.

If you are on my walk to work; a Peters Milkshake cup on the curling rink stairs is common even though there are garbage cans at the top and bottom of the stairs. But some brattish 14-24 yo are just to lazy apparently so trash in public areas do exist.

Dont get me started on smokers and orange filter part of their precious cigarette, its like they are adult babys with less cool looking soothers and they think its their right just to throw that thing anywhere they please.

This. You'll always get the arguement 'Well there's no ashtrays'...then either butt out your smoke & hang onto the butt until you see a trash can or...ya know...wait to have your cigarette? When I was a smoker I went out of my way to make sure none of my butts ended up on the ground. Although looking around at the curbs & areas around street drains I'm not even sure why I bothered. It's like it totally socially acceptable to litter as long as it's only cigarette butts.

Here's an idea, work with the union to change job descriptions.

I can't even count the number of times I've seen a City of Lethbridge employee mowing a park and come upon a piece of garbage only to mow right over it and shred one piece into hundreds of little pieces. God forbid they have to get off their mower to pick it up because it "isn't in their job description"

Are we going down the "union employee" road?

Not at all it just blows my mind that common sense doesn't prevail. In a city that has wind like Lethbridge it's quite frustrating
