I actually doubt that the conflict would exist if the islands had gone back to China because Japan would've had no historical claim on the islands and the only claim would've been through annexation and everyone knows how Japan likes to talk about their wartime exploits.
But that territory wasn't taken in the second sino-japanese war. Technically it didn't apply.

I think few textbooks acknowledge it. The Japanese government has apologized for wronging Asia, but hasn't explicitly mentioned Nanking.

Though at the same time, denying Nanking is akin to denying the Holocaust in most parts of Asia.

To be fair though, Japanese war crime atrocities whitewashing is common complaint amongst not just the mainland Chinese, but Island Chinese (such has Hong Kong, Taiwan) as well as Koreans, Phillipines, etc who don't have the same type of media restrictions.

Can't really paint all Asian populations affected by Imperial Japan with the same media restrictive brush.

Formosa (Taiwan) was also taken in the first sino-japanese war but was ceded back after WWII in the same declarations, so it seemed like those lost during the first war did also apply (benefits of being on the winning side?)

Just a big deal being made about a small issue to stir up the ignorant, nationalist masses and keep people's attention off the change of leadership that is about to happen and which occurs only once every ten years. That change is the big news, but this little island is keeping a lot of the general population looking the wrong way at the right time for the government.

China is like a magician... look over here at this big (not really) issue over in this hand while we have a really big issue over here in this other hand.

Yeah. A pretty standard political ploy.

One example doesn't apply to all examples. So obviously not.

It might not be official, but this was a pretty good apology.

Japanese Emperor Akihito has expressed his wish to visit South Korea and said he could apologize for Japan’s colonial rule if needed, a Japanese weekly reported, amid heightened diplomatic tension between the two nations.

During a Sept. 4 issue briefing with Koji Tsuruoka, the deputy vice-minister for foreign policy in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Akihito said he and Empress Michiko hope to visit South Korea “some day,” the Japanese women’s magazine published Wednesday reported.

The magazine also quoted the 79-year-old emperor as saying that he hopes that “Japan and Korea maintain good relations in the coming days.”
