The childish name is a nice touch too.
These guys work hard - if you don't like them that's fine - don't listen.
Publicly calling for them to lose their jobs stinks.
|
What else can you say though?
This whole notion of "don't listen" is ridiculous - the Fan is the only sports radio channel in Calgary. That might work in Edmonton or Vancouver where there's two sports channels and there's some competition, but in Calgary if you do that you have no other opportunity to listen to sports talk radio. Sure you could stream another city's station online, but most people want to hear Calgary sports discussed.
If you don't like them don't listen AND make your complaints heard so there is change. There's only so much airtime to go around so really what else can you do but fire someone? Embarass them by having to play sidekick to Jungle Jim on Saturday mornings?

There's not two all sports stations in Edmonton - there's the Team 1260 and that's it.

Well I assure you the complaints will do nothing.
Decision will be made on the basis of the ratings, specifically within key demographics, and the ability to sell advertising.
I get wanting to have your voice heard - but that's not what will drive any change, because there are always people that complain about the on-air talent. It's just noise, and nothing that stations could actually base decisions on.

Now I get that they chose a public job and as such criticism is expected. I just think calling for someone to lose their job is in really poor form.
|
They chose to go into a public facing career - broadcasting. They're subject to public scrutiny because of it. What someone makes is irrelevant when you're discussing performance on the job. What I'm struggling to get is why my comments about Steinberg are somehow any different to the hundreds of other similar statements regarding Bryn?
If its "really poor form" to say someone is doing a bad job and deserves to be fired on a message board then what is the point of having any discussion on any topic at all?

My mistake then - I was sure there are two. Either way, the point stands.

Sorry but, if the complaints are from the "key demographic" and there is a fall in ratings, won't that at least cause the station to look at the reasons?

That's the point of this place isn't it though - to discuss things and sometimes complain about things knowing it's not going to have any impact. If this thread is an issue then any instance of saying "___ should be fired/cut/traded" should be an issue as well.
One thing complaining does is potentially draw potential new listeners away from the show. If I just moved to Calgary and saw a massive thread complaining about the quality of the afternoon show I'd likely be less inclined to listen and even if I did I'd have a short leash.
It's funny because this is one of the few times where someone could actually rationally say they should be fired because we're all the primary audience. Anything related to on-ice hockey is tough because none of us are professional evaluators and never have all the relevant behind the scenes info. You look at those threads in the Off-Topic area where there's a government or medical screw-up and half the people are demanding heads roll based on an article with limited info. At least with sports radio, we're the people they are directly broadcasting too and it doesn't require more than listening to get all the information you need to decide if someone should stay or be cut.

Steinberg is fine. He was good with Kerr and is good when Peter Loubardias is on too.
Steinberg is supposed to be the secondary guy with Bryn leading the show. However Bryn is terrible at being the lead so it brings down the rest of the talent. Even Peter Loubardias struggles when it is just him and Bryn on air, Bryn just gives you nothing to work off of.
When he was on vacation and it was Steinberg and Peter I would listen each day. Once he came back I stopped listening again since the quality dropped so much.

Agreed, I keep hoping Peter will get hired for the afternoon full time.

I'm sure it isn't as Black and White as that. I'm sure the radio station will want to know WHY the the ratings are dropping (Is it Steinberg? Lack of Sports aside from NHL? Griffiths?).
Complaints actually do accomplish something.
I will also lodge a formal complaint about the lack of Farhall on the air.

What's what the Steinberg hate? I think he does a fine job. Not sure if he's still doing the post-game, but he was awesome doing that once Kerr finally left.

"don't ya think?" Is his key phrase to illicit discussion with his partner. He tries to play devil's advocate in discussions, but there is never anything of substance to his contribution. You can just hear the frustration seething out of whoever drew the short straw and has to work with him.
The sad thing is that it isn't even entertaining... it is frustrating, and I end up turning the dial out of anger more than anything else. I have tried to give him a chance, thinking he needs time to grow into the role, get acclimatized, so to speak. It has been a year now, and I see no signs of any sort of improvement. Loubardias and Steinberg should be the combo. Let Griffiths do the call in show after games, he may be more suited to that.

There are ways that stations do probe to find out why ratings are falling and to see what their key demographics are.
But I think forums like this aren't really given much weight (rightly or wrongly)
That being said more Farhall is a sure ratings winner.

I don't have a problem with people saying they are doing a bad job. I think wishing for and then celebrating someone losing their job sucks.

Steinberg is fine as a sidekick when they don't let him go off on his circular monologues and don't let him interview people.

You can express your opinion whenever you want - I never said you couldn't.
I in turn can tell you that I think your opinion sucks.
Which is what I'm doing here.
Farhall was a guy that did updates on the Fan and was sometimes on the morning show from time to time.
He was OK - knew a lot, but probably wasn't goofy or edgy enough.
Don't really know what happened to him.

He was kinda edgy. Remember that one time he flew off the handle and called Anaheim the Dicks?
Ok maybe I'm exaggerating just a tad. He did say that though.
