Okay? It's just a phone, man. Whether you get it opening day or a month out, you're still gonna have a year where you've got the premiere phone Apple has to offer.

When I joined Rogers before the smartphone era you could upgrade once a year without any extra fee (other than the price of the phone). When they got popular, you could upgrade smartphones every two years. Then it became every 2.5 years and they introduced early upgrade fees for if you upgrade earlier thn that. And now it's the full 3 years if you don't want to pay the early fee.
If I upgrade now I pay the phone price + $156 (12 months left) + admin fee $35 I think ........oh yeah and AppleCare.
I feel like I'm talking myself out of the iPhone 5 more each day. Too bad I kind of need a new phone.

What do you have right now? It it that old, or is your phone in rough shape? You say you have 12 months left; which would put you right on the edge of when the 4 came out; but 3GS was cheaper. If your phone is just old (3GS), I would post a wanted thread for a 4; offering your 3GS as trade. I say that because I'm planning on keeping my 3GS when I upgrade; as it's still a good iPod touch. Others may be upgrading from the 4 to the 5; but don't want to give up their 4 for the same reason.
Really, you have 3 choices right now:
- Upgrade to the 5 through Rogers. Pay ~$400 and be stuck for another 3 full years.
- Buy a 5 from Apple ($650), get it unlocked and have the freedom to switch after 1 year.
- Wait out the year; either with what you have or buying from somebody else. Then switch providers.
Of course there is another option. Call and ask to speak to retentions. Tell them you are looking at those options. Make sure they believe that it is worth the extra $250 to you to buy the unlocked phone now. Let them know that any way you go, you are done with Rogers at the end of 12 months; unless they give you something better.
Because that is what Bell is doing on their own. Good business for them- they realize it's better to get me into a new contract now while my old contract will cost me to get out; instead of waiting until I have no penalties to get out. When I was with Telus they did the same; offered me new phones all the time when I was under contract with them.

I am confused by your post. Okay? its just a phone man? What does that even mean? I said nothing of me getting the iphone or having to have it release day.
I was just informing the poster that any carrier saying they have ample supply is unrealistic as EVERY SINGLE IPHONE RELEASE there has been 2-3 week waiting periods.

For those of you who picked up the 4S the week/day it was released, what was the demand like and how many phones did the carrier have? I'm with Bell and just set up a new contract with them, but they aren't taking preorders anymore. I'm hoping that if I go to get the phone on Friday morning I'll be ok and they'll have enough stock, but I'm wondering how early I would have to be there in order to ensure I get a phone?

Did you guys check the chains that carry cellphones? I walked into Future Shop at 5:30 on Friday & take pre-ordered an iPhone 5 with no trouble at all.
You might want to call - Future Shop
- Best Buy
- The Source
- The Telephone Booth
- Audiotronic
- Walmart
You never know

I bought mine from Future Shop on the first day and they had tons of phones. The only issue was getting it activated because the system was crushed by demand.
My neighbor worked for Bell at the time and he told me they had plenty of supply as well.

You'd be correct. I got my 3GS when the 4 came out, it was cheap (supposed to be 100, but Rogers only charged me 50). I didn't qualify for an upgrade to the 4 at all... and technically not the 3GS either, but retentions had caved for me. =P (Sometimes they really do pity people who are using 2007-era Samsung flip phones because their last new phone was stolen a year prior!)

I'm doubtful anyone will want to downgrade a 4 to a 3GS, even if they're just using it as a spare iPod. I might hang onto it in case I need a backup, but as a main phone it's probably not going to last very long.

It's probably going to come down to sucking it up and upgrading, calling retentions, or buying an old 4 or 4S for the last year of my contract. =P Unlocked phones are just out of my price range, unfortunately.
On the other hand, I checked upgrade eligibility for various phones (can't check with a 5, but I can with 4S) and apparently I don't have an early upgrade fee after all. Upgrading with Rogers just got $143 cheaper...
..and I do like my 6Gb plan. It honestly knocked $30/month off my old plan. =P

CUPERTINO, California—September 17, 2012—Apple® today announced pre-orders of its iPhone® 5 topped two million in just 24 hours, more than double the previous record of one million held by iPhone 4S. Demand for iPhone 5 exceeds the initial supply and while the majority of pre-orders will be delivered to customers on September 21, many are scheduled to be delivered in October.

AT&T set a sales record with iPhone 5 over the weekend, making it the fastest-selling iPhone the company has ever offered. Customers ordered more iPhones from AT&T than any previous model, both on its first day of preorders and over the weekend.

I called and they had the order on file - seems like quite a few people didn't receive the confirmation email.

Dunno. They did say Friday was the ship date on my order. I assume they'll over-night from wherever they are shipping from, same as Apple does for their web orders.
It's not my phone anyways, so I don't much care when it arrives, and my wife is much more patient than me anyways I just didn't want to get get billed for something I wasn't going to receive.

Only downside to apple store order is junk ass UPS delivering. When I ordered my iPad it said on truck for delivery so I had my sister stay home from school all day. Then my mom stayed in the evening no call nothing I got it the Monday. I don't mind the wait but at least call your depot and tell them you can't make deliveries so people don't waste time.
