I'd rather have a screen that feels "cheap" but doesn't break so often that there are literally stores solely devoted to fixing them.
iPhone screens are so terrible, that it is actually a profitable venture to open a store, in a mall, where you pay rent and devot it to fixing cracked iPhone screens and backs.

Thanks, I'm always curious about how people are thinking about/playing the market. Ahhh, I was looking relative to the "$4 down from Tuesday's close" during the Wednesday press event - at one point it was about $4 down from the $660 Tuesday close on Wednesday.

I would suggest that the number of such stores highly correlated to the sheer number of iPhones out there. Something like 200+ million I think now? Probably why you also see stores that just sell iPhone cases/accessories - it just makes business sense given the sheer size of the market.

I'd like a roll call of long time Iphone owners who have cracked a screen or back.
5 of my buddies currently have a cracked screen or back. Those are 5/6 iPhone owners that I regularly hangout with. The one that doesn't has an otter case.

I've had two iPhones and neither have had a cracked screen. I don't use a full case either ( just one of these). My wife has one and hasn't cracked the screen either.
That being said, I have a few friends who have cracked theres. It does to take a good drop to crack the screen.

For the most part I've found the iPhone to be easier to damage but it (was?) glass so that's no surprise. Mostly though it's luck of the draw. I've had a buddy drop his from a height that he went "well, that's busted" and it was fine. I've also seen one drop from the edge of sofa onto a carpet and heard the crack of the glass crack.
At the end of the day these are all mostly fragile devices. My old BB Curve was a workhorse... but changing one time at the gym I let it dangle on the a bench and wham, broke. When I first got my Samsung Nexus S it felt cheap as frack but it's also shockingly durable because of the plastic. It has some slight chips in it where if it was glass it would be a crack, I can live with that.
Not all phones can be the Nokia 3310.

I've dropped my iPhone dozens and dozens of times, many of them not gentle drops, including one time off of a ladder about 20 feet onto concrete, and have never broken a screen.
That being said, we've had a broken screen on an iPod touch when it got stepped on, but that's hardly a bad thing to say about the company, since they replaced it instantly when I brought it to the store and told them what happened.

Then start a thread about it, stop derailing this thread which is about the iPhone 5.

A dedicated Android vs iPhone duke it out thread would be good. I would start one but I don't have anything bad to say other than when I see an S3 It always makes me think of surfboards.

Why do these threads always become so insufferable? I come in for some news or information and you get the usual nerd arguments. Its a phone, not your first born child.
Also, I had no idea if you dropped something it had the potential to break.

I pre-ordered at a Telus store downtown today and the sales rep there said all their pre-orders were required to purchase their Apple Care plan for $170 when I pick up the phone. I guess this is some premium thing because Apple care normally costs $99, right?
All he took was my business card so I don't have any obligation to actually buy from there do I? I think I'll look around to see if everywhere is requiring this additional Apple Care plan purchase.

I have an iPhone4 that I've dropped several times, even on ashphalt, and the only adverse affect is my volume switch sometimes switches just from pressing the top corner of my phone. Also, I put my phone in the laundry one day and only realized this about 2 minutes later. Dried it out on top of a shoe placed on my furnace vent. I had to replace the battery and that was it. I was shocked that it still functioned perfectly after replacing the battery.

I used to work as a sales rep for a Telus dealership, and those places attract the shaddiest employees ever. Here's what's really going on. If you are a contract renewal, the sales rep probably makes about $20 selling you the phone.
The Apple care costs $99. The other $70 is fees added on by the dealership, that the sales rep probably gets 30-40% of. Additionally, they will try and charge you renewal and handset replacement fees, which will total $60-70.
That sales rep is trying to force you to buy Apple care and then he will charge you an extra $130 in fees on top of that. He'll probably walk away with about $100 in commission instead of the $20 if he just gave you an honest deal on the phone.
Here's what you should really do:
1) Call Telus, tell them you want to quit Telus and demand to speak to "Loyalty and Retention". Don't take no for an answer from the sales rep.
2) Tell Telus you have a family member/girlfriend on Rogers who is getting a much better deal than you. Use this as an opportunity to negotiate down your contract. Remind them of how long you have been with the company and how much money you spend. Be firm but not an A-hole. You want the rep to like you.
3) Negotiate down the contract renewal fee, which should be $35. Dealers will typically add their own fees on top of that.
4) Since this is an Apple product that you don't need a dealership for service, I would buy directly form Telus or Apple. Cut the shady dealer out of the equation.
5) Report this dealer to Telus. Tell them they outright lied to you. Report the sales rep to the dealership.
