And that's exactly the problem newcomers have coming into the market. Some of us have invested so much into organizing our environment to fit our needs that moving to a new platform would be onerous. Introducing a Galaxy tablet into the mix would require finding all the equivelant apps that I'm currently accustomed to. For example, my food diary software that I've spent hours creating a food dictionary on... I'd have to start from scratch and reprogram everything.

So people get settled into their camps and like the never-ending PC vs Mac debates, many just end up defending the choice they made to make there decision feel justified. I am happy with my Apple set up. Others are happy with their Android set up. And I'm willing to leave it at that.

Works for our family, not sure why it is such a bad thing.

I'll wager $10 that 5 years from now you will still be using an Android-based product.

Phone's an Samsung/Android, the Sonos music system works flawlessly with Android. I've been streaming things to my TV via my xbox for years now.

The only Apple product (but barely use now) is my iPod. I can't stand it because of the need to use iTunes with it but it's the best stand alone music player by far.

I hate being boxed in. When a new product comes to market I don't have to hope Apple comes up with a similar product to fit it into my life like it appears Apple users do.

Then it's not a bad thing if it works for you.

I mean, not even sure what you're betting here.. but 10 dollars in 5 years? Yeah sure, I'll take that bet.

I was using a Blackberry two years ago, an iPhone a year ago, and this year an Android. Not sure what your point is.

Yep it's a eternal nightmare. Like a really shiny Taiwanese prison.

you need to be introduced to SharePod

http://www.getsharepod.com/

no installation required, you can even run the .exe from the ipod itself. and it will also let you download all the mp3's on your ipod to your PC keeping the naming convention intact

I am curious, are you able to stream songs on your android phone directly to a sonos system?

Apple on Tuesday sent out invites for an upcoming event happening in San Francisco on September 12, 2012. The invitation I received says the event will take place at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts at 10:00 am.

Hmm, I honestly have no idea. All the songs that are on my phone, are from my computer, I've never ran into that situation.

My guess is that Apple event is to announce the iPhone 5.

Not directed to you since you stream everything from your computer, but I find my setup of iphone/ipad -> airport express -> sonos to be fantastic. I don't need a computer in the setup, just buy a song on the device, add it to a playlist and hit play and all while I am sitting on the deck or on the couch. Its pretty slick.

Oh absolutely, the Sonos system is amazing. It's a perfect example of you incorperating a non-Apple product into your ecosystem.

See, it can be done!

To each their own. Yes I'm locked in but quite happy to be so. I like getting free iOS upgrades that work with all my devices (I haven't had anything obsoleted yet...), I like getting $20 OS upgras for my Mac that bring increasing integration with iOS. I've tried to integrate some third party apps like Airfoil and they just didn't work seamlessly.

Bottom line is I'm happy with the train I'm on, it surpasses my basic needs, I get enough new (to me) features often enough to satisfy my geek side (I'm in the software business).

Unless I'm mistaken, I don't believe it's officially supported. I think there are ways to do it but it absolutely murders your battery life.

Not to mention Sonos systems are extremely expensive. The Sonos Connect which basically acts like an Airport Express (plus a couple of features but minus the router capabilities) costs $400. So if you want to hook up your stereo equipment and have a 3 zone music setup, you're looking at a $1200 investment vs. the $300-350 with Airport Expresses and/or Apple TVs.

They're good if you don't already have equipment, but if you have amps and speakers to use I think it's overkill.

Did the giant 5 in the picture give it away?

Hopefully this means they won't be going with a name like "the new iPhone". The iPad naming scheme has always struck me as overly stupid and complicated.

Yes it is expensive but a good choice for a centralized whole home audio system, much cheaper than some of the other Crestron or similar systems.

You still need an airport express with the sonos connect to use airplay

Is there a reason you didn't just go with Airport Expresses or Apple TVs for the base stations and hook them up to regular audio equipment? I have a pretty rudimentary 2 room audio setup with an Airport Express and an Apple TV that I plan on expanding in the future and I'm mulling over some options. Initially I was attracted to Sonos but to me the cost is too prohibitive if you want to use your own amp/speakers. Like I said above, it's $400 per base station compared to $100 for Apple stuff. There are some differences in features, but nothing that's important enough to me to justify the $1000+ cost difference in a 3 or 4 room setup. The Sonos speakers seem like a better deal, but I'm not sure I want to be tied to an all in one unit.
