Quite organically by the looks of things. Those of us interested in buying the new iPhone are naturally interested in comparing it against other phones on the market that may be better. I mean, it would be completely and totally ######ed to buy the next iPhone without comparing it against other brands. What if it's worse? Since we don't have much info about the new iPhone, we're learning about its competitors a bit. Don't worry, one day this thread will be filled with all the Apple talk you could ever hope for.

Can you explain to me how it's weird?
The last page has been comparing the new iPhone to it's rival in the smart phone market, Android. It has also had discussions on iOS' use of the Podcast application. The only way discussions like these can be considered weird, is if you expect an Apple thread to be 3-4 people jerking each other off over the next Apple product. People are allowed to be critical of Apple and compare it to rival phones.

Actually, I expect the Windows 8 phones to be the rival coming up. It's just weird that it's always Android that gets the comparison. Take away the widgets and the ability to change the colors of your fonts and buttons, and Android is pretty much the same as iOS (in general terms, this isn't a "someone copied someone else" thing).
If we want to have a really interesting discussion about directions of smart phones, why don't we pick an OS that is actually unique, like the Windows Phone 7/8 one.

Windows phones are always supposed to be the "next" rival smartphones, but they never get there. it's one thing to make a good phone OS, it's another to actually start capturing some market share

Well, the wife couldn't wait for the new iPhone. Besides, she really wanted something with a 4.5" screen and rumour has it the new iPhone will be 4". We went into Rogers on the weekend and she got herself a Galaxy S2 for $29.99 on a new 3 year deal. Yes it's not the latest version, but still an excellent phone with LTE support and her coming from a BB 9700, it's a helluva upgrade. So no iPhones for us in the household it looks like. The whole family is on Android now.
Oh and sorry for the Android talk FanIn80.

Heh. That's an odd situation for Microsoft to be in. "Good product"/"No marketshare".

New Apple earphones for iPhone 5 allegedly appear on video -The Verge

It's been a while since Apple last updated its pack-in earbuds; the current model with the in-line remote and mic came out in 2008, and the design of the buds themselves dates back to 2006. That may be about to change with this month's all-but-certain release of a new iPhone, however.

I know those earphones are being ripped to shreds on the Apple rumor forums, but I for one think it looks good and judging by the smaller holes for the music output, think it's probably designed with better sound in mind. The current ones' fit are probably the worst in the industry. These actually look like they'll fit snug in ones ear, so that's an upgrade on it's own.

Still... it looks like it's hard plastic going into the ear canal. I much prefer soft plastic.
These are the ones I use:
http://www.heliumdigital.com/shopping/shopexd.asp?id=92
They are awesome, awesome, awesome. The best part about them? I have no idea what the wires are made out of, but they don't tangle!! Usually with headphones I have to schedule in 5 minutes before needing them so that I can have the necessary time to untie them from the unholy knot they have somehow managed to finagle themselves into... So after getting these ones and using them for a week, I bought 2 more and gave away all the ones I got with my i-products.

^ I agree completely. I've been using regular JVC Marshmallows for a few years now, and the fit is fantastic. I don't know why Apple hasn't adopted them in ear earphones, because they fit fantastic and the sound quality is superb.

Those look great and a good price for ear buds. I've been using 20 dollar ones from London Drugs for years now, the Apple ones always hurt after 2 minutes and the ones that came with my Samsung phone blew away after 6 months and weren't good enough that I sought them out again. The ones from London Drugs are good, cheap, and comfortable as frack. Soft jell caps that can be removed and replaced with a plethora of other ones. And if I lose them or step on it and break the ear bud.. 20 bucks.. nothing.

I'm curious how many people really make a choice between Apple, Android and Windows? I find myself looking longingly at the big Galaxy screens, but I will never switch from iPhone. Why? Because in my house we have a Mac, 2 iPhones, 3 iPods, 2 iPads, Apple TV, 3 Airport Expresses, all of our music uploaded to iTunes (8000 CDs), all of our email, photos, contacts synched, most of our movies rented via iTunes.....
Call me a fan boy if you like, but the reality is all the pieces are more than good enough, they all work together well enough, and overall I'm quite happy and enabled. I'm not naive enough to claim this is all best in class but it's all damn good. It's pretty hard to imagine a scenario where introducing an Android device would make sense.

I'm in your boat as well. I have far too many Apple products working together to ever stray at this point. For me it's the airport expresses... I have my kitchen, living room and basement all wired up to accept music from my phone at any given time. I'm never giving that up.

Edslunch I am like you, the Apple ecosystem has slowed invaded my home and I can't get out!
In all seriousness we have 2 iPhones, 2 iPads, 4 ATV's and 2 airport express's (the computers are all PC's). This ecosystem allows us to watch anything we buy or download through the ATV's (airplay), play all of our music on any TV or sound system, and play music through our Sonos zones using airplay on the airport express's. It works quite well and to change over to an Android system would require quite a bit of work, first of all setting it all up and then "training" the family again!

Not getting locked into the Apple ecosystem was the best tech move I ever made. I was heading that way and made a conscience choice to move away... being locked into a brand like the three of you are sounds horrible.
