When you post pictures like that Zamler, it really makes one wonder why she chooses to go with the racoon look ever. She looks damn fine in that picture.

Going from a sound that got them little to no popularity (their first two CDs), to a sound that makes the multi-platinum....not sure what other word you could use. It's all about how you get there. The White Stripes and Black Keys are examples in this thread. They continued to have the same approach to making music even as they got more popular. Nickelback though, look at the 3 album run of Silver Side, Long Road and Right Reasons. Silver Side, filled with big time radio ready hits, sells huge. Long Road lacks those same radio ready hits, sells much worse than Silver Side. So with Right Reasons, there they go again, lots of radio ready hits, massive seller.

Nickelback's goal is to sell records. First and foremost. It isn't to create music as art, its to be rich. As such, congratulations to them on achieving their goals. But their goals are what quantifies as selling out within music. Artistic ambitions are irrelavent to them. Making money is whats relevant. If they were driven by art and happened to become very succesful, then you couldn't call them sellouts. But if you told Chad that auto-tuning their next album would ensure 10X platinum sales, I'd betcha we'll be hearing some auto-tuned Nickelback.
hahahaha, come on dude. The Black Keys are Nickelback in a different package. They both have finely-tuned, radio-friendly sounds that appeal to an insanely broad audience.

The Black Keys were slumming it, then saw the success Kings of Leon got by becoming more "radio-friendly", decided to sell a couple tunes to Budweiser, went out and wrote "Tighten Up" and "Howlin for You", and voila, are now the biggest band in the world.

I don't know why she does the massive makeup thing, part of her "carefully orchestrated" image I guess? She looks way better with minimal makeup.

This is from an Avril song. 'Talented songwriter'? She just strings together as many teen cliches as she can.

Might be one of the single most insulting things I've ever heard. The Black Keys sound is now less blues based, but radio friendly? They of a whopping 3 top-100 songs out of 7 albums versus Nickelback, who had 6 on one album?

You seem to know a lot about the Black Keys intentions for writing music. Please enlighten those of us in the dark of when/how they told of their sell-out ways.

Some of the stuff on their new albums can sound quite different from older things. A lot of that can be attributed to having more money/recording time/possible creative freedom in order to come up with the sounds they currently do. As people have said, musicians evolve. no one keeps playing the same stuff over and over. Peoples problem with Nickleback is that they do, in fact, play the same stuff over an over. When the Black keys started they were guitar and drums. That's it. Now after gaining more popularity they have the ability to expand their music beyond their own respective instruments and tour with larger ensembles. I really don't see how you can compare the two. If "Howlin For You" with different lyrics appears on their next 3 albums, then you may have a point. But at this time, The Black Keys are a band with a constantly evolving sound. Not only that, their sound is way more awesome than anything else out there right now.

Please point me in the direction of another song/band that sounds like "Howlin' for You" or "Little Black Submarines" because I want to listen to that band too.

I just looked up the Avril Lavigne Wikipedia entry and it all makes sense now.

She has at least 3 tattoos gotten for former boyfriends, including some dudes name under her boob.

Damaged goods. Kroeger comes to the used car lot, sees a former beauty pocked with hail damage, makes a low but reasonable offer, we have acceptance, and a family is born.

So basically the Black Keys are even worse at being Nickelback than Nickelback

(I'm a big proponent of "to each his own" for music, but I still can't understand why this band gets the time of day).

Not all of Avril's music is vapid and shallow. Her early stuff is actually pretty good. After hearing her first album I thought to myself, this girl is really talented I can't wait until she matures a bit and that comes out in her music. But she pretty much went in the opposite direction.

Pretty sure The Black Keys over the last two years have gotten more radio play than any other rock band, with possibly the exception of The Foo Fighters and Nickelback. X929 has a Black Keys every hour, on the hour segment.

Everyone else seems to know a lot about Nickelbacks intentions of writing music. What, you don't think The Black Keys are in this to make money?

Look, I think The Black Keys are very talented, and are very good at what they do. But listening to their first two or three albums, do you ever think they would make a song as generic and schlocky as "Gold on the Ceiling"? Or today, do you think they would have the balls to make another rap album? No way.

Seeing as they put out about 7 albums before ever even getting radio play, I would say its not exactly the be all end all of their existance.

I had no idea they did a rap album, but I'd be interested in listening haha. I like "Gold on the Ceiling" its a catchy tune.

Yes "Little Black Submarines" has the same chord progression as Stairway....along with about a billion other songs. What's your point? Led Zeppelin doesn't make music anymore. I'd much rather listen to artists try to be Zeppelin than listen to artists try to be... I dunno, some crappy band haha. As long as theyre doing it well. Zeppelin took flack in their day for copying blues artists before them too. We all have to draw from somewhere.

So a band getting played on the radio a lot is a sellout? I think you're misinterpretting the result with the process. Metallica for instance had a top-40 song (One) and a top-10 album (AJFA) before they become Selloutica (and while they were still Alcoholica). Was it that that song and album were so commerically viable? Or was it because people really like them? A 7 minute 24 second song about the horrors of war...doesn't sound to me like they were thinking hit song when they wrote it.

With Nickelback, the endgame is the same: Produce hit, popular songs. Thats their process. For them they usually get the result as well. They go into the studio trying to record a hit, and they usually do. For the Metallica example, they wanted to write a song based off "Johnny Got His Gun", and it happened to become a hit because its an awesome song.
