People may hate me for saying this, but I think all of AC/DC's songs sound the same, to the same effect as Nickelback.

I met Avril at a club once and tried to hit on her. Did the whole "pretend not to know who she was" thing. She was incredibly nice, and very, very pretty. We ended up doing a shot together. Good times.

Cue the overreacting poster. Has anyone here wished ill will towards them? I actually made a positive comment in regards to Kroeger in that he's an overachiever and my comments about Lavigne's career has nothing to do with my feelings towards her as a person. People need to understand that the word 'Hate' is a very strong word and I simply don't see hate directed towards them in this thread. Some comments about their talent and intelligence does not equal hate.

Maybe after Back In Black, but before then, many of their tunes where quite different and very blues based. They started to sound the same after the death of Bon Scott.

Yep. Their late stuff all sounds the same. I still think they were at their best with Bon Scott but that's another topic. The difference between AC/DC and Nickelback is that AC/DC has some really great old stuff to fall back on.

God the blues is awesome!

I would disagree. There will always be rabid support for pop-rock like what Nickleback does and that's a trend I don't see changing. People act like they ruined music, but since I've been listening to music (probably 25 years) there has always been a band in the popular sphere "ruining" music. For this reason I don't see it ending anytime soon. I think bands like the White Stripes are just a result of people on either side of the bell curve getting annoyed by what's popular, and I think that is also a constant reaction to the popular music of the day.
The Black Keys are a very interesting example to bring up. Their music appeals to the crowd that rages against NB (they've even ripped on them in the media I think), yet they've also publicly backed behaviour that many would classify as selling out such as selling music to a marketing campaign.

I dont think selling your songs for marketing is selling out. As liong as theyre not CREATING the songs specifically for said campaign.
As for the bolded portion, my point is that this group of people is growing. I know when I was growing up (in middle school/highschool) all of the people my age listened to old classic rock because music of the day was soooo terrible. And now those people in my age group are either fans of this older style rock coming out, or are the ones playing it. And thus, the population is trending away from generic pop-music, or at least I hope so.
I'm not saying that everyone will convert, but its nice to see them gain popularity. Especially considering it started out as just 2 guys (still is, but their music obviously includes more instruments than just drums and guitar now).

I guess what I don't get is by:
- having a dream of becoming successful by creating music
- working hard and making decisions to reach this dream
- finally achieving your dream and the fame and fortune that goes with it
that this somehow makes you a sellout....

Actually I don't see a problem with any of these statements. Why hate on any of them? It's not like any of them kicked your dog, did they? Go all emo and hate on society for making them stars if you want. Personally, their success has little to no bearing on my life. Good on them.

I made this comment already but as a Flames fan, I'm guessing you've had some irrational, unjustifiable hate for Oiler and Canucks players. No difference whatsoever in hating musicians you do not like. So either don't ever have a problem with it, or always have a problem with it. Or, as you've mentioned, ignore it. Freedom to do as we please means some of us can hate Nickelback and some can defend them. And we're all entitled to our thoughts. Don't like them? Don't comment on them.

I know it was a typo but I had to laugh at the first point.
Going from a sound that got them little to no popularity (their first two CDs), to a sound that makes the multi-platinum....not sure what other word you could use. It's all about how you get there. The White Stripes and Black Keys are examples in this thread. They continued to have the same approach to making music even as they got more popular. Nickelback though, look at the 3 album run of Silver Side, Long Road and Right Reasons. Silver Side, filled with big time radio ready hits, sells huge. Long Road lacks those same radio ready hits, sells much worse than Silver Side. So with Right Reasons, there they go again, lots of radio ready hits, massive seller.
Nickelback's goal is to sell records. First and foremost. It isn't to create music as art, its to be rich. As such, congratulations to them on achieving their goals. But their goals are what quantifies as selling out within music. Artistic ambitions are irrelavent to them. Making money is whats relevant. If they were driven by art and happened to become very succesful, then you couldn't call them sellouts. But if you told Chad that auto-tuning their next album would ensure 10X platinum sales, I'd betcha we'll be hearing some auto-tuned Nickelback.

Fair enough.. I know nothing of their music, certainly could not name any albums and only a handful of songs.
You obviously have followed the band for some time and noticed changes, whereas I only know a few songs.
I guess it's this intense hatred of the band that makes zero sense to me. Like that yahoo who did the concert review in a paper, without even going to the show.

Nickelback is just watered-down Alice in Chains without the soul of Layne Staley's vocals.
And why does Nickelback sound so pissed off in their newer songs? This Means War sounds like a 3:30 long death threat towards someone.

Mike Bell (what is it with Calgary writers and the last name Bell totally sucking) is a pretty big time hack. His reviews are often laughable. I think as I mentioned before I'm not sure how many people hate Nickelback intensly so much as they don't like how much play they get as a band compared to some other artists.

The only thing I have against Nickelback is how massively they were overplayed, along with Creed. Then Theory of a Deadman came along and it seemed like CJay was all "Theory of a Creedelback" all the time. I just got really sick of it. But the hate for them is just way over the top, IMHO. As overplayed as their music was, people zealously trying to one-up each other with Nickelback insults is at least as bad.
