I have a hard time understanding Lady Gaga being considered revolutionary or whatever it is. Johnny Rotten wrote some spiel about her being some kind of genius exploiting the music industry or something, and I thought, ah, he's saying this so he doesn't appear "old". Then again, she is exploiting something. Cindi Lauper also wrote something for Time praising her in the 100 most influential people issue. I understand that many hear have heard her sing and play piano and that she is apparently talented at that. Perhaps if she had some spectacular side project going, I might change my mind. It just sounds like a bunch of regurgitated disco music to me. Somebody give me a clue !! It's the groundbreaking revolutionary part that I just don't get...
I'm normally quiet at work, but the other day when I heard Katy Perry for the 80th time I did finally scream in agony.

Lady Gaga is considered revolutionary because of the state of pop/mainstream music currently, namely that it is stale, boring, formulaic and generally unlistenable. So she comes along with a variation from the mean, and instantly she's a revoltionary genius, the next Madonna or whatever.
As to why either Nickelback or Avril sucks, well with Avril I wouldn't say she sucks, she's just nothing beyond meh. Saying she writes her own songs doesn't matter because Nickelback write their own songs too, and they mostly are laughably awful. The reason people hate Nickelback has less to do with the fact they aren't that good, because there are lots of terrible bands out there, and more to do with the fact better bands are ignored. Its just for how awful, formulaic and predictable Nickelback is, they get 10-100 times more attention from music fans than many bands who are 10-100 times more talented than they are.

I'd wanna hit that for the rest of my life as well, just have to find a way for her to take a vow of silence. But, this is the best of two sucks merging. There will be an interesting ending to this one.

Quite a sad revolution. That's kinda what I thought. Thanks Senator Clay.
I guess Mr Rotten likes the blah blah blaaaaaaah blah blah blah parts. I am a huge fan of him usually. Societal context more important than the actual music...ah pop.
What I find interesting is that the people the musically astute people I know in their teens/early 20s for the most part don't like Gaga at all. By musically astute I mean they are very aware of pop music history. Many of them prefer listening to "old" stuff, meaning pre-early 90s or 80s I guess!

I wonder if Chad is going to serenade Avril at the wedding with "Something in Your Mouth" or "S.E.X."

Hanna meets Napanee. Sounds like a dull episode of Kraft's Hockeyville (or an exciting interracial lesbian video, depending on your perspective).

I didn't read the thread to see if this news has been reported yet-
I heard they're going to adopt Justin Bieber!

Well considering they have been writing together would anyone be surprised if her next album had songs like; " Flick of Your Tongue" or "I'll Be Your Backdoor Babe"?

Canadians should be celebrating two small town kids who have talent to write catchy hooks and successful pop songs. Good on both of them.

Ummm....then by default do you not have to also say we should celebrate Justin Bieber? Small town kid (Stratford, ONT), obviously can write catchy hooks and have succesful pop songs (not me saying this, just he has more hits than either of them combined has had in the last 5 years). Dangerous, dangerous statement right here.

The amount of hatred directed towards two people who you've probably never met and who just make music for a living is pretty ridiculous. Ya'll need to relax. If you don't like it, don't listen to it. I wish these two the best.
I met Avril at a club once and tried to hit on her. Did the whole "pretend not to know who she was" thing. She was incredibly nice, and very, very pretty. We ended up doing a shot together. Good times.

Wait a minute. So you are trying to tell me that Lady Gaga is NOT stale, boring, formulaic, and generally unlistenable?
Could have fooled me.

Simple answer for those who don't like their music... Change the f'in station!
I have never bought any of their music, but the notion that they are talentless hacks is laughable to me. Who cares? Even Justin Bieber, I cannot understand the hate for a kid who isn't even 20, and has very little impact on people's day-to-day lives.

There are a lot of people out there making music for a living that a majority of us have probably never heard of. It's very likely that most of them write better songs than Nickelback and Avril Lavigne.

The points that have been mentioned about substantially better and more talented artists being ignored while those who engage in what I like to call "Music Mad Libs" are much bigger stars annoys those of us who are fans of the smaller artists.
And the irony of saying leave Bieber or Avril and Chad alone, why bash people you don't know? Well, I assume this board is filled with Flames fans. I'm guessing there's lots of Canucks/Oilers players bashing, and not too many people here know any of them. Sports fans, music fans, it doesn't matter. Rationality shouldn't be part of the equation. Baseless hate is way more fun (and most of the time it isn't totally baseless)
