That's not the way it went, It was Al's brother Rob who was fighting with Al just beaking off like he was something special. Hadn't it been for a couple of my friends both would have been beaten very bad as the 3 guys they were messing with weren't exactly choir boys. Nobody was actually charged just thrown in the drunk tank for a few hours.

I think he grew up a lot after that night.

19 year old kid has a little too much one night, is wired a certain way after years of coaching and a unique environment, throws a punch he shouldn't and you want what? Him to serve time? If he'd done this on the ice, he would have maybe been given an extra two, or a ten minute misconduct. If it was really egregious, he'd get ejected, but likely not suspended.

Give him his community service and be done with it. Let's not act like hes the only party at fault here. Bar fights never happen because one side was doing nothing whatsoever and the other side just wanted to hit somebody. And I highly doubt someone was breaking his balls because they knew he was 'Michael Ferland'. We're not talking Iggy or Kipper here, we're talking about a 5th rounder who didn't make the world junior team and plays in Brandon. How recognizable could he be in Cochrane?

Live and learn. If Batman saw this, he'd give all involved a shot to the kidneys and tell them to grow up before continuing his pursuit of actual fiends. Nothing to see here.

Actually, they do. Often.

People who say that often times can't be realistic about what they were doing. Everyone I know who's ever been hit at a bar played the 'I wasn't doing anything' card and then it turned out that they had in fact been talking s*** or talking to the wrong girl, or had a chance to walk away and didn't take it. If you're just sitting in a booth or standing at the bar, the odds of someone punching you out are beyond microscopic.

The fact that he was with his dad is also a little peculiar to me, as I don't know many people who'd willingly be the aggressor and throw down without cause if their father was present. Given that he was out having a few drinks with his dad in a place he isn't from, I have to assume he's got at least a decent relationship with him. So something more has to have happened than we're being told.

He shouldn't have hit the guy when he was down. Apologize and move on.

Having never been in a bar fight but seen enough in my time there are plenty of times when people weren't doing anything other than being in the vicinity of idiot drunks that wanted to act tough and fight. It isn't always them misremembering what role they played in the fight and often just dicks with too much to drink.

Considering we know nothing about Ferland and his father not sure why something more has to have happened. Guys fight with their dads, moms, kids, wives etc. present all the time.

Yup, he is not a serial killer so I am not looking for him to get life in prison. I am

saying that if you are gonna sucker punch someone who was helping a person on the

ground and you break his orbital bone that you don't get the minimum punishment. I

am no lawyer and I am guessing Ferland doesn't have a criminal record so I assume

it will be community service. If the min. is 10 hours community service

(for example) and the max. is 50 hours community service I hope he gets 50 hours

and learns his lesson and moves on. Inferring that I equate a bar fight to being a

serial killer is ridiculous.

Threw a punch he shouldn't have? Maybe, or maybe he did more. Also, what penalty he would have received in a hockey game is so irrelevant, it's ridiculous.

Again, way too many assumptions here. We're not "acting" like anything, we're just saying if he's found guilty then he should have to face the punishment, while you're acting like nothing happened and they should just drop the case.

Live and learn. If Batman saw this, he'd give all involved a shot to the kidneys and tell them to grow up before continuing his pursuit of actual fiends. Nothing to see here.

There is something to see here, and the police laid a charge, so we'll see what happens in court.
You have way too many assumptions in there. There's a reason this is going to court, and when the dust settles, we'll see what happened and what the justifiable punishment is. That's how the real word works.

If things happened as outlined in the article, according to witnesses, this was a cheap shot by a gutless puke. I'm a flames fan, but there's no excuse for blindsiding someone as they're helping someone else up.

You think a 19 year old is just out for tea at 2 am at the saloon in Cochrane? Now I've heard it all. The poster is just pointing out that its more then likely he was out boozing and making stupid decisions.

If this were an oilers or canucks prospect its not even funny how many people would be all over the player for being a drunk loser.

By the fact he is one of those cool guys who apparently can never smile for a picture, I deem him guilty.

I don't care what any of the Flames do the off the ice, as long as they perform on the ice.

"There's a stack of freshly made waffles in the middle of the forest! Don't you find that a wee bit suspicious?"

I worked a long, long time in this stupid business which unleashes mindless drunks onto the public at 2:00 in the morning. I am sure it is possible but I find it unlikely that the guy that got punched was simply "helping some one up". There are 2 sides to every story and most drunk people think a) their side is right and 2) they are completely innocent.

Another side of this gong show is that the lawyers for Ferland and the PR machine for the Flames are telling everyone on their side to shut up so we aren't hearing the other side of the story.

Being from Cochrane I can also guess that the 2:00 in the morning crowd at the saloon was 95% locals so the "witnesses" are probably the buddies of the guy who got punched.

Listen, for sure there is a chance that Ferland sucker punched some innocent guy in the head at 2:00 am but my experience tells me we probably shouldn't be wasting time feeling sorry for anyone in this story.....heal up and move on, don't be out getting into crap at 2:00 am and be glad the guy didn't land on his head and die....both sides.

I'm not advocating running this guy off for a fight, but I'd prefer they not be dickbags.

I agree, but in the end I rather not know anything about their personal lives. I don't care who they're dating, how many kids they have, if they are in the gay pride parade, if they enjoy the a few beers after the game.

Ferland's trial set for June 2013

http://www.canada.com/mobile/iphone/...tml?id=7507713

Quote:
[In a written statement Tuesday, Ferland maintained his innocence.

“It frustrates me to see that a court trial may be the only way to bring out the truth. Unfortunately, I can’t control what other people say or do. All I ask is that the police, the prosecutors and the court look at the evidence they same way they would if I wasn’t a professional hockey player,” said the statement, issued through Ferland’s lawyer.
