It's hilarious that people feel we should all vote on a human rights issue, and continue to focus on it. Not to generalize, but how many praise the constitution yet want to infringe on the rights of people getting married in an institutional manner? Homosexuals have equal protection under the law. That doesn't entitle them to automatic inclusion in every program, entitlement, exemption, ect. the government provides its citizens. It is an embarrassing controversy. The fact that 50% of Americans (and let's not forget that not very long ago it was 50% of Canadians as well) also support absurd and unjustifiable inequality just happens to be an even bigger, even more embarrassing controversy.

History fairly judges Ty Cobb as a bigot even though his racist views were prevalent in the 1920s when he played for the Detroit Tigers. The fact that Tim Thomas is not alone in embarrassing himself does not make his stance any less embarrassing, and I'm confident that the vast majority of people will see it that way in 20 years, if they remember Tim Thomas at all by that time.

Regarding the situation, as someone who may or may not be gay, I disagree with this guy's opinion, and probably wouldn't go to this place (although this story has gotten good publicity for me...I never heard of the place before this). However, with that being said, I'm not sure that cities should be banning him from opening shop in different places. Obviously nobody has a RIGHT to open a shop in a city, however, if people are truly as disgusted with what he said as they seem to be, then I assume he would open up shop in Chicago and Boston and his stores would flop. Might as well let the public decide if they want to be supporting him or not.

I don't understand. Why would these sorts of discussions be frowned upon? These sorts of discussions are at the heart of our political and social discourse. It is through these sorts of discussions that we advance as a community and society.

What an odd request, honestly. especially considering that to this point the discussion has been very cordial and I think quite respectful with regards to a highly sensitive and contentious issue. If you want to rant, then go right ahead. most of us here are grown ups, and I for one am not about to allow my feelings to be hurt by an opposing viewpoint.

I hope that you can understand and appreciate where I am coming from: As a professionally trained biblical scholar I do feel compelled from time to time to teach and to correct others about the enormous amount of confusion and misunderstanding about the biblical text, which invariably is bound to enter into these sorts of conversations. It's nothing personal, but for those who choose to marshal "scripture" in support of their views, I don't believe that it is inappropriate for me to expect that they clearly understand the texts that they invoke as authoritative.
