No I don't think that is the reason at all

I think there's a few factors here.

1) Some people are critics. They will be critical of almost any commentator save for the best of the best (and may even be critical of those.) There just isn't any pleasing this type of person. They are likely to be critical of anybody who is the Flames PBP voice.

2) Kerr's voice. It does get a little shrieky at points and I can see how this irritates some people.

3) Kerr's inexperience. He's obviously new to PBP and this showed last season. He misidentified players at times (Comeau for Tanguay when obviously he could only see the O on the jersey). There's things he does that will improve over time I'm sure.

4) His use of catchphrases. These rub some people the wrong way.

I think your theory really doesn't play any role in it whatsoever.

Because I'm not from Calgary and I only listen to post-game shows on Fan960 the odd time, but I really don't see why people have a hate on for Kerr's PBP.
I really like Kerr when he is on the radio discussing the Flames, asking questions, providing analysis, etc.

As a PBP guy, he is (obviously just my opinion here) the worst I have ever heard (at least for major pro sports). He wanders off topic during the play, then scrambles back in when something important has inevitably happened. He is extremely monotonous most of the time, then suddenly adds inflexion as if he just remembered a tip he got from Peter Mayer, except that he will do it when inflexion is neither required nor appropriate.

Most of the time, I am left with the impression that he doesn't really even WANT to be doing PBP, that he would rather just chat about the Flames with Simmer

But I agree with you, mikeecho... the afternoon show is much better with him subbing in.

I prefer hearing Kerr in the afternoon. He is great at that and I would rather listen to him over Griffins etc.

If I was to rate his PBP he is a 6/10 - maybe he gets better, who knows... Lots of PBP guys are terrible, and only an elite few are just that - elite. Maybe with time, Kerr gets better.

I've actually heard him say that doing PBP is his dream job. Which is too bad, since he doesn't seem to be very good at it. Even more sad to me, is that he is really, really good at being a radio host. 960 hasn't been nearly as good without him. I'd almost forgotten how good it used to be, until Kerr was back guest hosting.

Since I think Kerr seems like a really good guy, I hope he gets to keep the PBP job and gets better at it. Selfishly though, I wish he would just go back to 960 so I could stand to tune in again.

I'm standing by it!

To me, Kerr's forte is commentary. He's so good at thought-provoking conversation and IMO the station's best at interviews. (If Steinberg starts another question with 'how important is it...' ugh)
But his voice and delivery doesn't fit that of a PBP guy. I like punchy and confident. In a movie, he wouldn't be a lead actor, he'd be the quirky buddy to the lead actor.

Bryn is a yes man, Steinberg speak in circular sentences to chew time.

Fan960 is bush league now. Calgary deserves much better.

Damn! Every time I see this thread bumped I pray it is with news the Bryn Griffiths is gone from the Fan.

I am again, sadly, sadly disappointed.

Try listening to Team 1040.

Just a bunch of guys having a circle jerk over a female athlete saying things like, "I'd like to drink her bathwater" and stuff like that. Very misogynist hosts on that station. They often talk too much about movies and music instead of sports.

The only good part about Team 1040 is Jeff Patterson. He's the only respectable guy on that station.

Believe me, Fan 960 is VERY professional compared to 1040.

"Looking forward to it." - Bryn Griffiths

He's just on auto-pilot every day. Boring and unopinionated. Easily manipulated by Steinberg and doesn't offer any insight. Not a fan.

Well at least i know im not crazy. Not sure what happened or what rogers was thinking with the moves they made.

Loubardius(no idea on the spelling) was FAR better than Kerr as pbp. To me, Kerr takes any excitement out of the play by not actually doing pbp. he does every third play or so-if that makes sense? and doesnt really describe the play as its happening.

"giordano"................ .......... "tanguay"........... "iginla shoots"

Maybe he will get better, but who knows.

That being said, Kerr was really good at the afternoon radio gig. Thoughtful opinions, passion, intelligence. Pretty much the oposite of Bryn Griffiths. He seems like a nice enough guy, but he struggles painfully to fill time especially when he has to do it alone. He has little to no opinions of his own and they usually make zero sense when he does have them. I too often find myself asking my radio "what the hell are you even talking about?" very frustrating to listen to and its obvious why steinberg always sounds like he's ready to choke the guy. I dont like dogging people too much, but it seems like they wrongfully passed over steinberg for that job- Or Luobardious.

I personally preferred Loubo to Kerr on commentary, but very few people in local media work as hard to be prepared every day than Rob Kerr does. He's at every signing, event, practice, whatever, taking notes and talking to people to stay connected to what's going on.

I am surprised Bryn hasn't posted here yet, he used to post on HF Oilers once in awhile. I all but guarantee he reads this thread though, not that that matters.

Who is Bryn Griffiths?

Love it when he ends a babbling comment with ....."Don't ya think?
He is terrible, and agree that it was great to hear Kerr back on the afternoon show.

I'm so far past the point of caring how professional these guys are; be interesting and entertain me; you're covering a game, not a UN summit. Be silly be rambunctious do what you want as long as it's funny and sports-themed. Listen the the Sklar Bros when they host Rome, Jay Mohr, Adam Carolla, and do something with that tone. Please.

If the consensus is actually that one-sided, maybe more of a formal request into 960 is due... Writing to main sponsors, emailing Rogers, etc.
