Rick Nash was always good, no lower league baloney.
I can't think of any skill player who is huge and came out of nowhere. Penner maybe.
Has hockey been as heavily scouted ever as these days?
Jamie Benn is the only comparison I am seeing. Also Eric Daze.

No offence to you, I like you as a poster and am sure you know your hockey, but Mr. Weisbrod, who's opinion I'd put above yours, mine and everyone else's on this board, compares him to a young Nieuwendyk. He's not even 6'3 at this point, the guy isn't a giant.

It was mentioned in previous pages on this thread that it sounded like 2 teams had planned on taking him in the 1st round if still available.
Love hearing the story though and how calculated this move was.

I think the first round went perfectly, I definitely wanted Jankowski unless Forsberg or Dumba went on an epic fall to #14. It's the swing for the fences mentality that people have been wanting to see.
Curious to see who they take at #42. Collberg, Aberg, or Bystrom might be there. Maidens looks good too. Better not take Frk...

Yes they can. All drafts are the same in every sport. If interested in a player when a trade up or down is involved they get the inf on who they think would pick the player they are after. They make the jump before the other team can make the pick.
In this case they probably could have dropped another couple of spots but did nt want to take the chance.

yes there were.
TSN's final ranking had him 41st
TSN's mock draft had him go 29th
Button had him ranked 14th
Central Scouting had him 43rd among NA skaters
The kids ratings were all over the map due to him being a late bloomer that finally started to grow.
Also in regards to Weisbrod just trying to make the pick look good, at the STH meetings it was said they wanted to draft a player in the first round that they thought would be the best player in the draft and said he wold be a project.
Also note they had his name on the jersey, teams don't do that unless they are sure they will get that player.

I remember when Ryan Jankowski was rumoured to join the Flames front office, I think it was as GM or Assistant GM.
One things for sure, Mark will have a good support network to lean on. The family obviously knows a lot about the game.

by the same token, none of those teams decided to move up either, knowing the flames were interested in Jankowski.

And im here because i truly love the Flames, i dont like what they are doing, but i am a passionate fan and CP is the best place to talk about where the team is heading and what they are doing.
I Dont believe Jankowski is going to be the #1 Center that some people are going to peg him as. I dont believe he is going to be an impact player. At this point i would have been 100X happier had they drafted TT which is who i wanted months ago.
|
It's great that this is your "opinion", but why is it this way? Do you have an actual opinion about his skills that won't translate to becoming a very good player. And in regards to TT as you call him, he played at 160# in an inferior league, nobody heard of him before his "big" year and he will "probably play 2 more years in Finland to get as big a Patrick Kane" before he comes over. So if TT can be so awesome why can't this kid progress in 2-3 years to become a player.

I believe in the Jays.

You have to love all those people freaking out about Jankowski not being rated highly by scouts when Collberg, who CP thought was the best option at 14, wasn't even picked in the first round at all.

Lets play devils advocate and call you on your strawman arguement. What makes Gaunce or Teravainen more likely to be impact players? You just continually throw crap out without providing a point of reference to debate. Great junior high school debating style.

I have not seen him play, yet alone anyone he has played against. So I will reserve judgement. But when I was skimming through prospect profiles/stats/combine data his was a name I circled as exactly the type guy the Flames would go after under their current management. high risk - high reward. I just dissmissed him because I thought he would go between 30 and 50.
This was the guy they wanted, and it seems lik it may have leak to some of the TSN guys he was the Flames guy, so if another team wanted him I don't think he was getting past 40. I think Button had us taking him even at 14?

So, you are criticizing Feaster here for discussing options that included maybe trading away our first round pick, even when you have no idea what the return may or may not have been, AND even when he ultimately didn't make the trade at all?
Gotta be #####ting me.
Some people do just like to whine for the sake of whining. Unreal.

Given his uncle is the current Habs scout, do you really think he would have made it past them early in the 2nd?
