Any college kid can do that. I can see that loophole being closed in the next CBA though.

I'm not quite sure how this would be good for his development.
I'd rather him play in the OHL personally.

Unless that loop hole gets closed in the next CBA, yes. However, listening to his interview on the Fan, he talked about looking forward to playing for the Flames. I hope that excitement sticks around.

the key is playing one year of junior after being drafted, and then heading to college. Also, he is drafted under the current CBA, so it doesn't matter what the new CBA rules are

If that doesn't get changed in the next CBA, then yes. NCAA players can become UFAs 4 years after being drafted.
It's not necessarily that big of a risk though. The majority of successful NCAA players sign with their drafting team without incident.

If he plays in the OHL he becomes ineligible for the NCAA. I saw a quote where he talked about how you can't start college too late but you can start it too early.
Also I have nothing but faith in Jim Montgomery being his coach, in fact it makes me like it even more.

I'm sure the Flames did their due diligence afterwards, but when the assistant GM is making statements like that it's going to be pretty tough to override that first impression.

Isn't the Assistant GM a former scout himself and overlooks the scouting department

Flames could have taken him in the 3rd round, brutal pick in the first.

the new CBA won't change a thing. Jankowski was drafted under the current CBA rules.
The same thing happened to 2002 and 2003 draftees. The old, old CBA applied to them, not the current CBA rules

Not going to lie, I was disappointed in the trade down and then the pick. But after spending some time away from the initial irrational reaction, I really, really like the pick. Couple of small things stand out.
1) The name printed on the jersey, basically means the Flames were going after this kid well before TT and Maatta were available at 14.
2) Feaster's comment about "Weisbrod saying don't trade the 1st rounder, we have a player we want this year." Means that the Flames weren't a 100% sold on the draft class and were willing to trade it for something else until they saw this kid. Considering the scouting the Flames have done in the past two years, that's some impressive pedigree.
3) Now that I understand this was the kid the flames wanted all along, trading down to 21 and getting a second was a fantastic play. As fan with no inside knolwedge I'll admit I didn't enjoy that, but whatever that's the fun of the draft.
Kid sounds like a good pick and I think we may have found a diamond in the rough.

Rick Nash was always good, no lower league baloney.
I can't think of any skill player who is huge and came out of nowhere. Penner maybe.
Has hockey been as heavily scouted ever as these days?
Jamie Benn is the only comparison I am seeing. Also Eric Daze.

Zajac is one that comes to mind - not a superstar, but same sized and came out of nowhere.

I like the pick. Haven't seen him play but back when Feaster had the season ticket holder meeting he mentioned a player that would take a bit longer to develop but he believed would be one of the best players of this draft class. So they seem to have know for quite a while that this was their guy.
Dropping seven spots was risky if they truly believed that this kid was going in the first round but the payoff is a pretty high second round pick that sounds like it is going to have a decent pick available as everyone has been saying the top fifty is really good but beyond that it gets weak.
Plus our hockey guys looked amped at the pick. Wisebrod looked like a kid on christmas morning when they showed the Flames table before their pick. And the rest just looked giddy. Really great to see a bunch of guys that just love this kind of stuff.

Had an idea!

He certainly has the frame to become a big kid.
If they want him to play at 220lbs, he'll be a beast.

The fact Teravainen isn't a center is one thing that makes him more likely to be a #1 center.

Perhaps it would be in your best interest to watch the interviews and such before making posts about the pick being a "slap in the face to the scouts" because had you seen the interviews you woudl have heard that Button told Weisbrod to go see Jankowski play.
Seems to me like Jankowski was the scouts pick and they wanted to make sure Weisbrod saw him.

Good to know, I thought it would be whenever he signed the CBA at the time would apply.
