I'm not wishing for the yotes to fail - I'm just adding info to the conversation. Don't take it personally.

Really? This happens? Well it appears I definitely underestimated things. That's nuts.

No, the Dallas sale resolved to Tom Gagliardi (former Canucks co-owner)
What I believe it means, and I won't claim expertise, is that if necessary, the league will forward revenue sharing and TV revenue payments ahead of schedule to the Devils if the team ends up with cashflow problems and is at risk of not paying the bills. (rumoured to be what happened with Dallas). The accumulating debt would remain the owner's problem, but his entire reason for selling most or all of the team is to get that under control. I would be willing to bet the incoming owner, when Bettman finds him, will be assuming some of the outstanding debt as well.
Basically, the NHL's role would be to keep the team operational while the financial issues get worked out. The Devils' owner has nearly exhausted his ability to fund and operate the team due to his debt load on the arena, and the league simply can't allow a team to collapse, especially if it were to happen midseason.

CP should look into some cheap flights to Glendale and offer some signatures!

I dunno. It's far cheaper to fly down and attend a game in Glendale than it would be in Quebec City. Our position, ironically, should be to support the team staying!

Oh the apathy is there. Most of those who signed at the grocery store in June won't bother to mail in their ballot come November.
If GWI did this correctly, they would have hired the local referendum business to get the signatures. This signature drive is almost pro forma and the real question is whether the referendum passes in Nov and if so is it binding on the council that is against that result?
I haven't really followed the story/thread enough to know.

Ok, so while it's not the same situation as the Yotes, it's still not very pleasant for the league and the collective ownership groups. I still gotta think this is affecting the BoG (if I am using the term correctly?) in some ways. Especially since Atlanta was just moved and as you mentioned Dallas was just in the same trouble. It doesn't fill one with a bunch of confidence.
If I was an owner I would be wondering about the stance of staying at all costs. Course they have info and strategies we aren't privy to. But still, I'd be wondering about the current strategies of the league.
Unless this is just all a plan to keep the Yotes in Phoenix as long as possible because other teams (ala Altanta) will have to be moved too.

Pathetic.
Plus you need to be a registered Glendale voter to assemble signatures

Those situations aren't even remotely similar. Dallas was in trouble not because of issues with the franchise, but because of issues with the owners wealth and other investments. Hicks needed cash. That's pretty much the same issue that is currently playing itself out in New Jersey.

I think the thread title is quite fitting for this saga. The very fact that no one knows what "Monday" means any longer says a lot about what you need to know.

Gimme a break. What about the three to four thousand Canadians that are in attendance when the Flames visit Glendale to play the Yotes? Not to mention the Canadian franchises that generate approximately 1/3 of league wide revenue (revenue I might add that the Yotes draw from to help stay afloat).
Might want to consider using a narrower brush in the future.

So you think they stay in Jersey, with no real problems (like Pho)?
I've heard a move is quite possible. That's kinda what I'm going on. I could be wrong, but I didn't hear it was like the Dallas situation.

There are issues with the franchise besides Hicks problems. The teams play has dropped off and so has the attendance. They are currently 28th in attendance and Gagliardi has some work to do.
Also pretty sure Gagliardi never owned a part of the Canucks. He bid on them with a partner but his partner scammed him and bought the team for himself.

When city A doesn't care about the team, there isn't much of a rivalry, so I don't care about the game as much either. If we are playing the Oil or the Nucks, we know they care a lot, so it's easier for me to care as well. I like to feel the tension, the adrenalin rush and yes the agony of defeat as well.
If Phoenix moves to QC, I know their fans care just as I know the Jets fans care. Now I can hate the Jets and hopefully the Nordiques as well. With the Coyotes it's just whatever, ho hum, in fact it's worse than that, it's an insult to the game that a team stays there when it isn't wanted by enough people.
I suppose we could play all the games at one site and watch it on TV and just pick a team, but that wouldn't be very satisfying to me. I like the loyalty and the rivalry.
