The mob mentality is fascinating, it's one of those things that proves that we are animals after all.
We're trained from a very young age to fit in with our peers and act "cool". This is basically what happens when the "cool" people choose to vandalize and loot. If you had the group of 4 or 5 "cool" kids in a grade 2 class to do something, there would be 20 kids that copied them and then 4 or 5 "social outcasts" who didn't. It's interesting how we think we grow older and mature, when the same things happen in every age group.
It's easy to say that you would condemn every "bad" thing in the world, but I guarantee that you have participated in something that will make you out to be a hypocrite.

What you speak of in the first paragraph is known as Genovese syndrome (or in layman's terms, the bystander effect). The more people present during an emergency situation, the less likely any one particular person will deem their involvement necessary, on the assumption that "someone else will step up".
A 'mob mentality' you reference in the second paragraph is unrelated to it.

The article in the Globe and Mail says the man will only serve three weeks before he is out on probation.

Too bad that the judge does't have the latitude to sentence people to hard labor sentences any more.
Wake em up at 6 and put them to work scrubbing graffiti with a tooth brush, followed by cleaning out the street gutters on the East end and disposing of discarded heroin needles.

Politicians such as Christy Clark should be doing the hard labour too.

Wow, they really stepped it up, I had assumed they would charge one person a year.
Pathetic.

That's great and everything but what does it have to do with a bunch of spoiled punks who rioted and destroyed property because their hockey team lost?

Some of that has to do with the stringent charge-approval standards in B.C., but the biggest issue is a lack of funding in the justice system. The provincial government has just kept cutting and cutting - the system was stretched about as far as it could go before this high-profile and resource-intensive incident.

Doubt it. He pled guilty so the only ground of appeal would be the sentence. Appeals are expensive and this case it wouldn't be worth the money.

Miss Congeniality gets conditional discharge - no criminal record.
And she looks terribly sorry for actions as she leaves the court room.

Not surprising. Doesn't make sense to give someone a criiminal record and jail time if they don't hive a history of criminal activity. Not sure looks or gender bias has anything to do with this descision.

Now, I may be wrong, but I think that participating in a riot, break and enter and theft are all criminal activities from which we can make the statement that she has a history of criminal activity.

Her participation consisted of stealing two bottles of water and a bag of potato chips? While she obviously wasn't in the right, that seems like it would be overboard to give a criminal record for such a slight offence.

And if it had of been some troll looking dude he would have been convicted with shoplifting at the very least (criminal record). Gender bias hard at work. :/
